Physical Therapy
A note from Gary Shiffman from Millenium Physical Therapy
To: Velocity Athletes, Families Friends
My name is Gary Shiffman of Millennium Physical Therapy. I am the Director of Athletic Rehabilitation here at our Mahwah clinic. Almost all of you have walked past our office door on your way into or out of class. Sometimes people peer in, and I think they wonder, "What do they do in there?" Usually (if the door is open) you'll see people (our patients) performing exercises to help them improve their strength, balance or flexibility. Basically, we get people back to physical activities they enjoy. Sometimes that means playing tennis or field hockey or soccer. For some people, gardening or taking a hike is important. Sometimes we help patients get back to work. Some of you have had physical therapy yourselves and most people know at least one person who had orthopedic surgery and had stories to tell about his or her experiences in "P.T." What makes the difference in physical therapy is the therapists who provide the care. Jeff Rose, P.T. of Velocity chose Millennium to be the onsite provider of P.T. services because of our reputation as experts in the rehabilitation of active adults, adolescents and children. That is what we do, we get you better. Presently we have 2 P.T.'s treating patients here in Mahwah.
1) Jessica Garcia, P.T. - Ms. Garcia has over 16 years experience as a P.T. She is a recognized specialist in treatment of shoulder and elbow injuries. Jess has worked in the Paramus office since 2002, In addition to treating athletes, Jess is raising two athletes of her own. Both Andrew, 13, and Samantha, 8 swim competitively year round. Andrew also plays football in Suffern.
At present, Jess is treating patients here in Mahwah office on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:15-2 pm
2) Gary Shiffman, PT, ATC, CSCS - I have been a licensed P.T. since 1980, a certified athletic trainer since 1988 and strength coach since 1991. I specialize in post-op rehabilitation. I treat patients here in Mahwah Mon & Wed evening 3-7 pm & Fri 9-4 pm. We are proud of our association w/ Velocity Sports Performance here in Mahwah. The facilities are beautiful and Sean and his coaching staff have been great to work with. Whenever you see our door open, please stop in to say hello or if have any questions about injuries or pains that won't go away. If we are not busy with patients, we will be more than happy to "take a look" and tell you what we think. If we are busy, we will gladly schedule another time for you to come in to see one of us. We look forward to meeting you soon . Wishing you the best of health.

February 09

Ottila Stura - Adult
Ottila is 46 years old and is a Financial Advisor for Chase. She likes to swim, play volleyball, ski and go horseback riding when she can. She also likes to read, listen to music and volunteer for her son Elliot's school, St. Joes. She has been married for 21 years to her husband Carmen and also has a yellow lab, Duke, who she loves to play with. Ottila has been coming to Velocity since the end of August. Laughing, she says the favorite part of her workout is when it's over. At the same time, she is pleased with the results because she has lost weight, has more energy and just feels better in general. Ottila's dedication to her personal goals and positive energetic attitude is why she is the Velocity Sports Performance February Adult Athlete of the Month.
Jim Ciarlo - Youth
Jim is seven years old and is currently a second grade student attending Peter Cooper Elementary School where his favorite subject is hand writing. His favorite sport is football and he is a huge fan of Donovan McNabb. Jim plays baseball and basketball as well but plans on playing football through middle school and high school and hopefully one day for the University of Miami. He has been attending velocity for almost a year now and has made great strides. Jim's improved focus in class and dedication are some reasons why he was named February's Youth Athlete of the Month.
Dan Gagliardi - D1
Dan is 14 years old and attends Felix Fiesta Middle School in Clarkstown, NY where he is enrolled in all honor classes. Dan plays baseball, basketball and is a downhill skier. Baseball is his favorite sport where he plays the corners and pitches as well. One of his favorite moments in baseball was when he hit 2 homeruns in a tournament in Syracuse NY. Dan also plays guitar and drums at home and in a band. He has been coming to Velocity since September and thinks all the workouts he has done are good, no favorites that he can think of. Dan and his father have noticed some changes since he joined Velocity. Although he hasn't started back to his sports yet, he has put on about 10 pounds in muscle, is faster, is better on defense in basketball and can jump higher. Dan's hard work and consistency secured him the February D1 Athlete of the Month.
Tim Maguire - D2
Tim is a senior at St. Joe's in Montvale. His favorite subjects are math and accounting and he plans to continue on to become and accounting or business major hopefully at Iona College in New York. Right now Tim plays 3rd base on his baseball team and defense on soccer. Baseball is his main sport and he fell in love with playing baseball back in a little league game when he made a game winning catch. Tim also looks forward to going on fishing trips to Florida and likes to bike ride. He has been coming to Velocity since April and it's not surprising that he is stronger since his favorite part of working out is the lifting. He also says he is lighter and faster and noticed how much he has changed during soccer season. Tim's great personality and hard work has earned him the title of Velocity Sports Performance February Developmental 2 Athlete of the Month.
