The Story of the Honeyguide
Our periodic email newsletter is named after the Greater Honey Guide, a bird that has developed the remarkable habit of leading tribespeople to wild bees' nests, with the promise of honeycomb and grubs once the humans have opened the nest and taken the honey.

The complementary relationship shared by bird and human represents the newsletter's goal - to periodically lead readers to new and timely bits of information about East African wildlife, culture, and travel.

October is Fair Trade month and to help you play fair, here is a little guide on Fair Trade. And once October is over, we hope you join the movement of responsible shoppers who have fun and play fair all year round.

To make playing fair a little extra fair for you, we are running a special that's both fair and free* on our popular Cattle Bags.

 Fair Trade 101

1.      Fair = Good
According to the dictionary, fair means acting or being in conformity with what is morally upright or good.  While simple, that principle is not always easy and 'good' is subjective. Here at Another Land, we believe that 'good' is about driving profits and benefits to producers.

2.      Fair = Partnerships
Fair trade is a partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade.

3.        Fair = Sustainable
Fair trade is not about charity, but rather is about creating sustainable and positive ways for human beings to make a living in both developing and developed countries.

4.        Fair ≠ Free
Many people frequently confuse fair trade with free trade.  Free trade means that goods and services are traded internationally without government restrictions. Fair trade means points 1, 2 and 3 above.

Fair to the Core!
Fair Trade principles have been at the foundation of Another Land's business model since day one over 12 years ago.  Our business health and success is directly linked to the communities we work with in Africa and in the US.  Everyone in the company, including safari guides, video shoot production assistants, Amias Project blacksmiths, and our US staff, has direct participation in the development of company projects.  The result is an incredible partnership that spans across the ocean and is equally beneficial to all sides.

Sample Benefit Buffet
In general, our African partners are able to earn a living wage, which means women no longer turn to prostitution as a resource, are able to feed their families and pay for school fees for their children. Here are a few success stories:

UdabangwaAmias Project Benefits
One of our favorite stories is of Udabangwa, one of the original 10 Amias producers.  Not only has she sent her children to school, she sent her grandchildren to school.  As a reward to herself for her accomplishments, she celebrated with that most cherished of indulgences among women - a fabulous pair of new HOT PINK shoes!

In Barabaig lands, women and girls can walk ALL day to fetch water for the family. One village used their earnings from our travel program to launch a clean water project that provided them with an earth dam filled with accessible, clean water. The standard of women in the village has increased dramatically and more female children are going to school as a result.

AnaniaMedia Benefits
Being featured in our media projects can launch careers! Anania, who was a featured musician in one of our documentaries, will be touring Europe and the US this spring with none other than internationally renowned banjo virtuoso, Bela Fleck.
