One of the things we are most excited about this summer is the new high ropes course which we will begin construction on it the spring.

High Ropes

"Will look something like this."

This will be a fantastic addition to our current adventure programs and something you won't find anywhere else like this in the area. High ropes courses are more than just fun adventures and we will be using their learning capabilities to the fullest.

We are always looking for ways to improve Rockhaven and offer more to our guest and campers.  In just the past couple of years we've added a 35' climbing tower, a challenge course, a zip line and now the high ropes course.

Be one of the first to come and experience it and tell your friends that "adventure happens here".

Staff Spotlight - Katrina Kinnan

Katrina

We have a great staff at Rockahaven and I'm so excited to have 4 of 5 returning staff this summer!  It's a real testament of the powerful transformations that take place at camp and what a special place Rockhaven is.  Returning staff is rare at such a small camp and I'm thrilled that we're able to have staff returning for 2, 3 and in Mabby's case 6 years!

Between now and June I'm going to be spotlighting our staff and perhaps letting you get to know them a little better.  I think we sometimes think of camp counseling as just a fun summer gig in the outdoors but it really is so much more and it shapes lives in profound ways.  Check out The Importance of Church Camp in Forming Leaders by Nacy Ferguson.  It also attracks some of the most creative, caring and interesting people you could ever meet and we are lucking to have great ones.

This will be Katrina's 3rd season at Rockhaven and when I asked the counselors to write a little paragraph on what Rockhaven means to them this is what she wrote.

"The first thing I always explain to people who don't know about Rockhaven is that it is a very special place. It is a place where I get to hang out with groups of awesome kids. And while we do play games, make crafts, and sing songs, you know... all that normal camp stuff, Rockhaven is so much more than that. We explore the world together.

What other job is there where you can hike mountains, wade rivers, stare up at the stars and contemplate the God of the Universe all along side a kid who may have never had a chance to try these things before? It is unbelievably amazing and working as a camp counselor has to be one of the best jobs in the world.

The real trouble is, I can't leave Rockhaven at Rockhaven. At the end of the season my body may pack up and return to my college campus in Emporia, Kansas, but my heart is still there in that canyon. My head is there too, it seems, because I keep thinking about next year. I have to tell myself that while it may still be gray winter now, it will soon be spring and summer always follows. I can hardly wait for summer to come, because summer means flowers, mountains and the coolest kids in the world. When it does come I will be there, ready to embark on new adventures and I really hope to see you there too!"

How cool is that?

Katrina is a huge asset and even though she's a "flat-lander" who comes to us all the way from Kansas, camp just wouldn't be the same without her.  Katrina is an art student and brings a wonderful creativity and, talent and camp experience to our program.   Many of us know how creative and craftsy Katrina is but what you might not know is just what a marvelous artist she really is.

She granted me permission to showcase her art here and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.  Here in Luke 7:47 Katrina shows her heart for Christ.

This  is one of my personal favorites.  It's called The Three Stages of Waiting for Prince Charming".  It tells a vivid story and with great wit.  If you can't see the third chapter... the note reads, "Out having a Life! Let me know when he gets here."

We're looking forward to another great season with Katrina who will be teaching art to our campers this summer. Thanks Katrina!
