Message from the President

Congratulations and Safety Resources

Congratulations to the officers and committee chairs of the 2010-2011 Parents' Association Board who were elected at the general meeting in April!  You can view the list of new board members by clicking on this link.

Spring has sprung, and our children are getting excited about a plethora of upcoming social events and looking forward to less structured time and greater freedoms over the summer.  This is a perfect time for us to remind them about good decision making, and to refresh ourselves on our responsibilities as parents.

The California Bar Foundation makes available some useful resources which are posted on the Parents' Association web pages: "Kids and the Law: An A-to-Z Guide for Parents" and "When You Become 18: A Survival Guide for Teenagers."  Depending on your child's age, you may want to use these documents as a starting point for important conversations about topics such as bike safety, Internet communications and social networks, smoking, curfews, driving, sex, alcohol and drugs.  Parker also publishes a helpful "Parent's Guide to Teen Parties," which is also available online.  We hope these tools will help keep our children safe at school, at play, and at work.

Thanks and warm regards,

Annika Bohl
Parents' Association President

Events

Parker Networking Event and Parker DADS

Join Parker parents, grandparents and alumni for a networking gathering in the Nicholas Commons this evening from 6:00 to 8:00pm. A similar event got rave reviews several years ago; now, with the support of the Alumni Council, DADS Club, Grandparents' Council and Parents' Association, we are bringing it back! This is a great opportunity to meet other professionals in the San Diego community with a connection to Parker. Whether you are seeking employment or have insights, leads or opportunities to share in your field (business, profession, non-profit, etc.), we hope to see you there! If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Alumni Director Kristina Starkey at 858-874-3382 or [email protected]

The final DADS (Dads And Dad Surrogates) meeting for 2010 will take place on May 20 from 6:30 to 8:00pm, and will be hosted at the home of the Dean family in Old Town.

Don't Forget!

Mark your calendars now for the faculty appreciation luncheon hosted by the 6th grade on Thursday, April 22.  What better way to thank our teachers and staff for the recent Ikidarod and all the other 6th-grade learning opportunities they provide?

First-Grade Parent Mixer

We invite all 1st-grade parents to the mixer to be held at the Lower School on Friday, April 23, from 6:00 to 7:30pm in the Library Lecture Hall.  Don't miss this opportunity to mix and mingle with fellow parents in your class at this purely social, casual event.  RSVP by Monday, April 19, to Ceri Keith

Lower School Class Creations

The Lower School Class Creations bidding came to a close with astounding success.  The students' artwork raised almost $17,000 after expenses in support of this year's Gala.  All 21 items received bids, and 5 of them sold for the guaranteed price of $2,000.  We are grateful to everyone who participated in the bidding, but especially to our student artists; their teacher, Mrs. Sharpe; the project organizer, Kathleen Lynagh-House; and Lower School VP, Ceri Keith, for their wonderful efforts in this successful venture.

Wine Party Thank-Yous

Special thanks go out to Megan and Mike Costa, Temple and Troy Zander, and Amy and Kevin Winn for generously hosting the final pre-Gala wine party!  Our amazing chairs, Melinda Mahony and Shannon Bartlett, coordinated six wine parties in locations throughout San Diego, and gathered donations of over 150 bottles of fine wine for the Gala auction.  Look for these wines in your catalog, and come prepared to bid on May 8th!

Parents of Non-Seniors Wanted

The Grad Night Committee is looking for chaperones for the senior class' last night on campus.  Shifts begin the night of Saturday, May 29, at 11:00pm, and run through the morning of Sunday, May 30, at 5:30am.  This is a great chance for all non-senior parents to see what the Grad Night is all about.  It's fun for the parents, too!  Please contact Grad Night chairs Suzanne Suttie, Judy Melville or Nancy Aul at [email protected] if you can help.

Parker Survey

Thank you for providing feedback in the recent 2010 Parker Survey!  40% of current parents responded, and School officials are receiving and interpreting results over the next few weeks.  In fact, Kevin Yaley will give a full debriefing at the Parents' Association general meeting at 8:30am on Friday, May 14, in J. Crivello Hall on the Linda Vista campus.  Please mark your calendar and plan to attend.

No-Cost Rebate Programs

The Parents' Association wants to send heartfelt thanks to the community stores that have generously donated funds to our school during the past year: Vons ($7,400), Ralphs ($446), Keil's ($270) and Albertsons ($80). These stores pledge a portion of their sales to our school. Parker has been an affiliate of eScrip/Vons for over seven years and has received over $40,000 in that time! Parker joined the Ralphs, Albertsons and Keil's programs this year.

Thank you, parents and friends of Parker, for your participation in the rebate programs! Each and every sign-up really counts. The funds are used for a variety of student school activities and classroom equipment purchases. You make the difference!

Click here to learn more about eScrip and other easy-to-use rebate programs that benefit all three Schools - Lower, Middle, and Upper - at no cost to participants or to Parker.

Gently Used ParkerWear Sales

It's spring cleaning time!  Gather up your children's outgrown ParkerWear uniforms (washed and in good condition, of course) and drop them off in specially designated bins outside the Lower School Office or in the Middle and Upper School offices any time.

Watch for the Upper/Middle School ParkerWear sale on Monday, June 14, and the Lower School sale on Tuesday, June 15.
