NOBEL PEACE LAUREATE WANGARI MAATHAI TO KICK OFF AASHE 2011 CONFERENCE & EXPO 
Conference focuses on sustainability in higher education brings in Kenyan leader to start off the dialogueWangari Maathai, Ph.D.
 

Denver, Colorado July 20, 2011- The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) is honored to announce that Dr. Wangari Maathai, the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree and the recipient of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize, will be the keynote speaker at the opening of the AASHE 2011 Conference and Expo: Creating Sustainable Campuses & Communities in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Oct. 9, 2011.

AASHE's annual three-day conference is the largest North American conference focused on sustainability in higher education, expected to draw more than 2,500 participants to Pittsburgh from all 50 states and more than 10 countries. AASHE has a reputation for providing the greatest campus sustainability information exchange and in-depth experience within this conference format. 

 

The focus of the 2011 conference is creating sustainable campuses and communities and will include community service projects for both conference attendees and Student Summit participants.

 

The AASHE 2011 Conference and EXPO is sponsored by many sustainable partners including Siemens, Trane, Waste Management, ARAMARK, Domtar, the International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education, Sustainability: The Journal of Record, Izzy+, and Cascade Tissue.  More than 120 exhibitors are expected to fill the EXPO Hall.

 

The AASHE 2011 Conference and Expo is hosted by Alfred State College, Carnegie Mellon University, Chatham University, Cornell University, Duquesne University, Frostburg State University, Pennsylvania State University, Point Park University, Portland State University, Slippery Rock University, University of Pittsburgh and West Virginia University.
