Haiti Disaster Relief
The congregations of SW MN Synod have sent $32,972 in Lutheran Disaster Response to assist the people of Haiti following the deadly earthquake. The response from throughout the ELCA has been more than 4.6 million dollars. We know that many congregations and individual from SW MN are among those who have made direct gifts to this disaster response.

As the headlines about Haiti are fading from the new reports, our care as Lutheran Christians is not fading. Like the relief effort that continues in the New Orleans area, your presence as ELCA Lutherans will continue for years and years to come as the people of Haiti rebuild their county and seek healing in their lives.

Both your prayers and your dollars are needed for recovery in Haiti. We will keep you informed of groups that will be planning servant trips to aid in the relief effort in the future. For now many groups are working on packaging and sending health care kits as a servant project.

Thanks for your support.  Read more>

SW MN Synod End of the Year Financial Report

The financial books are closed for 2009 in the SW MN Synod. We want to say thank you to all the congregations who continue to support the ministries that we share together and the vision for being Christ-like in our service. With your help we have made a difference in all kinds of ways within the congregations of our synod, institutions of our church body, churchwide work and God's larger church in our world.  Downward Mobility

There's a commonplace ministry experience I've found that many of us don't want to talk about. Every day we have to do things we're no good at. Our prospects for improvement are slim, yet we're rightly called on to do them. Say what you want about our spiritual gifts working harmoniously within the context of a suitably matched ministry. I know of very few such matches that are truly made in heaven. At best, the match is always approximate.  More>

Letters from the land of Cancer
Walt Wangerin's latest book describes, in intimate detail, how he has been living with cancer.  He writes about medical procedures, mood swings, physical weakness and work left undone; about the adventure of dying and the passage of death to life.  He writes about love and faith and hope.  His openness and honesty are gifts to all who have questions about what it means to live and to die well.  If you'd like to borrow this book, just contact the Resource Service Center sara.johnson@swmnelca.org)
