"Amreeka" Screened in Houston
WIFT was asked to cosponsor a special evening hosted by MFAH and the Houston Palestine Film Festival with filmmaker Cherien Dabis on Saturday, September 12. The screening of her debut feature film was also screening for a week at Angelika Film Center, but this screening was at MFAH Brown Auditorium, with filmmaker present. It was one of those successful evenings that you wish you could manage for each filmmaker's special screening. At least 400 filmgoers came to see the movie and meet Ms. Dabis. If you didn't arrive early, you probably were turned away, which is never the intent, but does happen when too many people arrive just before show time.
Ms. Dabis was delightful, as were the many representives and supporters of Houston Palestine Film Festival. "Amreeka" was the first feature to be distributed by National Geographic Films, and National Geographic Films President Adam Leipzig had this to say, "'Amreeka' is a great culture clash comedy, and with it Cherien Dabis has announced herself as one of the great new talents in film. It is both funny and moving." Cherien was also named in "Variety" as one of "Ten Directors to Watch" in 2009. Ms. Dabis had a terrific time here in Houston, and will assuredly remember this particular screening as being among her favorite experiences.
"Cook County" Screened in Houston
First-time director David Pomes, who also wrote this original screenplay, was back in town for multiple screenings of his locally-shot film. Many WIFT members were involved: Yankie Grant (Aunt Sally) and Rutherford Cravens (Fat Earl) had speaking parts, along with local actors you may recognize, including Deke Anderson (Officer Crumley) and Tommy Townsend (Pee Paw). Congrats to all the cast and crew involved.
A gritty story for certain, and maybe too real for some, it was truly a fine first effort from David Pomes, a Houston lawyer-turned-filmmkaer, now calling NYC home.
Rob McKinnon wrote, "The suspense, conflict, drama, tension, and violence which Pomes' intelligent script and spot-on directing creates, makes for a film which is compelling, insightful, real and thoroughly entertaining." You can read the full review at www.wift-houston.org; just click on the FILMS NOT TO BE MISSED button on the front page. I have it on good authority that if you missed the screenings and still want to see it, Alfred Cervantes may know how you might be able to buy a copy.
"OLD STORIES" on Stage at HCC
Congrats to WIFT corporate member Aubrey Tucker on the debut of "Old Stories - A Tale of Baseball and Love." Former Houston Astros ace pitcher, broadcaster and winning manager Larry Dierker made a star appearance in the show at the HCC- Spring Branch Campus last month. Written by Dierker, Tucker and Paul English, Old Stories is a fun, frolicking romp about the mythical Washington Capitols and their quest for the National League championship in 1970. "King" Cole, the Caps' long-time home run hitter, meets and falls in love with Cindy, the cousin of a friend, and the complicated rest is - musical theater! Stage Direction by Michelle Robinson, Production Design and Management by Sydney Yarbrough, and Music Direction by Aubrey Tucker and Lucy Cain Hargis.

WIFT Breakfast Rap!
The monthly WIFT Breakfast Rap is back! Thanks to WIFT Secretary Melannie O'Connor for hosting the July event. She was joined by Maureen Herzog (our Board member and Editor-in-Chief of Indie Slate magazine), Dave Walker (WIFT member and Advertising, Marketing, and Sponsorship Director of Indie Slate magazine) and WIFT member Ben Johnson. The four had a lively discussion about creating and managing a personal brand, marketing your skill set through social media and making the right contacts in a competitive economy. A delicious breakfast at LaMadeleine at 290 and 1960 set the scene for an enjoyable breakfast.
August's Breakfast Rap! was out Willowbrook Mall way at 58 Diner, and was hosted by our Board member Yankie Grant. Guest was David Pomes, who was back in H-town with his great indie film "Cook County." Everyone got an opportunity to get the inside scoop on the making of "Cook County."
Be at the next Breakfast Rap! for an opportunity to meet new people and mingle with those you know, or want to know, in a small, casual setting. Watch for each month's Breakfast Rap! by checking the Web site "CALENDAR, www.wift-houston.org. |

A Win for Member Denise Boucher & Team-Houston Film Meetup
Denise Boucher's team from the 48-Hour Film Project in June of this year recently received the good news that their short "Unfortunate.Net" won the "Best Short Film" award which was presented by The Gulf Coast Film & Video Festival.
The production team consisted of Producer Denise Boucher, Director Randy Chapman, Director of Photography Scott Jacobs, Editor Sharilyn Blakemore. Actors: Bardia Mattin, Damon Rexroad, Amanda Goggin, and Jessica Ward. "We had a Team of 26 and it was all the teamwork that made this all possible!" reports Denise. "This just shows that it doesn't have to stop at the end of the film, or a film project. There are other film competitions that you can be submitting your film to like this one!"
For those that didn't hear the sad news, this year's Gulf Coast festival was cancelled due to the loss of revenue from friends and sponsors affected by Hurricane IKE, but the entries were judged and awards presented. We look forward to the 10th Annual in 2010.

WIFT Member Shines in "Scorched" -Contributed by Melody Gray
One of our own members, Melody Gray, was recently in National Repertory Theatre's southwest regional premiere of "Scorched," an intensely dramatic play by the highly acclaimed Lebanese-Canadian playwright Wajdi Mouawad. NRT's production was only the third production in the United States. It was presented at D!verseWorks, this past August. It was an "epic mystery" about twins Janine and Simone who receive a suprising request in their late mother's will: Deliver letters to a father they thought was dead and a brother they never knew existed. These tasks lead them on a suspenseful journey to the heart of their mother's war-torn Middle Eastern homeland. Unraveling the mystery, they learn about her concealed history as a political activist and prisoner of war and uncover shocking secrets about their own origins. If you didn't get to see it, here is a photo montage of scenes from the play www.melodygray.com/NRT Scorched 8-2009.wmv More information on the National Repertory Theatre: http://www.nationalreptheatre.com/Welcome.html

WIFT Houston Updates From Your President |

|
 |
Dear WIFT Members & Colleagues,
WIFT HOUSTON MARKS ITS 14TH YEAR!
On September 24, you can offer a toast to the organization that helped enrich our media profession through networking and education, offering support in spirit and in deed to its membership, and to our production and entertainment industries in Houston and across Texas.
In my decade of WIFT membership and boardroom support, I've experienced and hopefully helped to futher develop industry growth and camaraderie within it. With dedication and enthusiasm many individuals and collaborative organizations are now working to make Houston a better place for you to realize your dreams. There is increasingly visible awareness of the industry today - screenings, meet-up groups, classes, seminars, webinars, and a growing number of festivals, all of which translate to industry growth, opportunity, and prosperity for you right here in Houston. Let's continue to educate and inspire our community to improve and expand, giving our creative best for ourselves, our industry, our city, and state.
WIFT has a great collaborative opportunity on the horizon, and I'm hoping to see each of you support the efforts of Houston Cinema Arts Society, a new 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating and illuminating the vitality and diversity of the City of Houston by presenting a festival of innovative cinema, mixed-media performances, new media, and installations to promote Houston's economic development, enrich the film and arts environment, and foster cross-cultural understanding. You've already received a notice about volunteering, and a variety of paid positions as well. The Web site is www.cinemartsociety.org.
The organization and the festival are about sharing interests among the arts and entertainment community, and spreading an awareness throughout the region and the world, that Cinema Arts Festival Houston will be a great destination to celebrate film and multimedia arts in the fall each year. This festival is for arts and theater patrons, film enthusiasts, gallery owners and operators, the university and educational community, and certainly all creative professionals. It gives Houston an opportunity to celebrate the creativity of artists working in the visual, performing, and literary arts in a variety of locations (indoors and out) in and around downtown Houston.
Many organizations have been involved in the creation of Houston Cinema Arts Society, and these and many more in the creation of Cinema Arts Festival Houston. It would not have happened however, without Mayor Bill White and HCAS President Franci Crane, who has lead the way. Together they were able to encourage others to give time, expertise, and energies toward this common goal to support and further develop Houston's film and arts culture. The founding organizations and city departments include Houston Film Commission, Houston's Convention and Entertainment Facilities Department, Museum of Fine Arts Houston Film Department, Houston Downtown Alliance, SWAMP, WIFT, Aurora Picture Show, Miller Outdoor Theatre, Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts at UH, and Houston Arts Alliance. Leaders from these organizations plus many esteemed individuals in Houston arts and film circles have worked behind the scenes for more than two years to make this dream a reality.
Cinema Arts Festival Houston will be November 11-15, 2009. Mark it on your calendar now. It has been named one of the "Nine For '09: Top Events and Exhibitions in 2009 by the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau." Announcements will be forthcoming in October on featured events, artists. activities, workshops, and locations. Sponsorships are now available.
As WIFT begins its 15th year, I am hoping for our best year yet. With all these great organizations working together, Houston is definitely the place to be. I challenge you to make it even better by getting involved - you have talent, ideas, and energy. Be active. Make time. Do it!
Happy Birthday, WIFT Houston!
Jolene McMaster,
President (2009-2010)
P.S. Contact WIFT's Membership Chair Yankie Grant at yankiegrant@sbcglobal.net, if you have a question on membership or want to refer a new member.
P.P.S. You can also help WIFT this way: For several years Randalls Food Market and Pharmacy have been in partnership with WIFT Houston through its Good Neighbor Program. You can stop by your closest Randall's store and link WIFT's Account Number 8870 to YOUR Remarkable Card. The more people who link their Remarkable Card to WIFT's number, the more money WIFT will receive. Do take the time to stop by the Courtesy Booth of your Randalls Store (just once to set it up) and support WIFT in this manner.
