Thanks to an offer extended by Marian Luntz, Film Programmer and Curator at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, WIFT Houston was a proud co-sponsor of the "August Evening" pre-release screening Saturday, August 9, at the museum's Brown Auditorium.  If you missed the opportunity to see this "bitter-sweet" feature on life and family hopefully you will be at its Houston opening in theaters this fall. It's a story of an aging undocumented farm worker named Jaime and his young, widowed daughter-in-law, Lupe, as their lives are thrown into upheaval. Lupe is more of a daughter to Jaime than his own children, and the two try to stick together...but change is inevitable.

August EveningWe congratulate all the filmmakers, but none more than our own WIFT member Connie Hill, who thought so much of this project that she took a leave of absence from her position as Director InterActive Education with PBS to produce this movie, along with Rice graduate Jason Wehling.

It was written, directed, and edited by Chris Eska, a two-time recipient of the Texas Filmmakers Production Fund, who took his first trip to L.A. a decade ago as a winner of the Texas Filmmakers Showcase. Alfred Cervantes conducted the Q&A following the screening.and it provided a candid discussion of the many challenges and hardships endured through the making of quality low-budget movies. It screened to a full house Saturday, and you'll have another opportunity to see it in theaters later this year. You can still help the process by telling friends, and going to the theater and supporting this deserving project.
WIFT Houston Updates From Your President

jolene

We're in the "dog days of summer," but you would never know it from all the activity being generated by your Board.

The WIFT Executive Board has added two new members:  Nancy Clinton and Melody Moss.  Both are charter members of our soon-to-be 13-year old organization.  Nancy is a recurring board member who comes to our aid when called upon.  She Chairs both our Bylaws Committee and our Nominating/Election Committee.  Melody was the Founding President of what was the Houston Chapter of Women In Film, which later officially became Women In Film & Television.  She now Chairs our Volunteer Committee.  We are grateful that they are continuing their support of the organization they helped  form.  WIFT Houston now has a total of 13 board members.

The Board has taken charge of planning upcoming events for the remainder of this year.  Marc Isaacs planned the July event with Molina's Catering"Gone In 30 Seconds," and provided a really fun and informative evening.  The Drake management and staff were the best.  What a location for creative minds to go full tilt!  Our gratitude to The Drake for giving us the audience Drake opportunity.  Molina's Catering also deserves a hand of applause.  The evening's repast far exceeded our expectations.  Lorenzo, manager of Molina's Catering, definitely sent no one away hungry.  Marc and colleague Kevin Tumlinson  inspired those present to take a new look at the way we network, and brand ourselves.

The table prepared by Molina's Catering was beautiful, and delicious, and appreciated.  Enjoying it (above) are Hospitality Chair Julie Furnas (l) and Yi Tian (r).   WIFT Members participating in the interactive program from left to right are Tasha Harman, Kay Salem, Julie Furnas, and Ben Johnson
[Photos courtesy of Heather Leigh Jackson, Photographic Design Lab.]

Nancy Clinton and Camille Bryan will host the August Spotlight Event at Locke Bryan Productions.  It's the Summer "Sizzle & Buzz" Mixer with a splash of HD Technology.  Cool down on the plaza with beer, wine, and snacks provided by Corporate Member Locke Bryan Productions, and check out the cool equipment and presentation by special guests Scott Burch and Karen Westbrook of TI Broadcast Solutions Group.

On November 6, Tina Cohen will chair the return of the popular annually presented "Ask The Agents" program featuring representatives from all the major Houston talent agencies.  Whether you already have an agent, or it's your next goal to achieve, or you have a child or other family member who thinks they want to get before the cameras, this is the chance to find out all!  It will be held at Houston Community College Town & Country Performing Arts Center.

WIFT Houston has also decided to give up its office space in the Houston Piano Company Building in the Heights for the greater good.  Corporate member Next Level Acting Studios can make good use of the WIFT space; so by September 1, WIFT will again be without an office.  It's not a bad thing, however.  Hopefully our next move will occur early in 2009, and it will be to a more functional space and location for us, and if we can dream a bit, maybe we'll be ready for a  part-time office assistant.  We do have some long-range plans that include (with your help) growing the organization.

Do thank your board members for their dedication and active participation!  They are Marc Isaacs, Vice President; Melannie O'Connor, Secretary; Karron Wardwell, Treasurer, Jenny Bosby, Camille Bryan, Nancy Clinton, Tina Cohen, Page Parkes Eveleth, Yankie Grant, Heather Leigh Jackson, Melody Moss, and Patricia Nilsson.

We're making progress in getting those committees formed.  Thank our members who step forward and volunteer.  Since the July e-newsletter, we've added the Hospitality Chair, Julie Furnas-Schuller, and Co-chair Nicole Fellers.   Your willingness to offer your valuable time is appreciated by all.  And there will be more to thank as we move forward.

We also wish to thank Sanjay Patel and Heather Leigh Jackson of Photographic Design Lab, a Corporate Member, for their efforts in bringing the WIFT Web site current.  There's much more to be done, but we'll get there.  The plan is to have the WIFT Houston online Member Directory up again before the month is over, and a complete makeover following that.

AN EASY WAY TO HELP WIFT HOUSTON

Randalls Good Neighbor Program Helps WIFT Houston.  For several years Randalls Food Market and Pharmacy have been in partnership with WIFT Houston through its Good Neighbor Program.  You can stop by your closest Randall's store and link WIFT's Account Number 8870 to YOUR Remarkable Card.  The more people who link their Remarkable Card to WIFT's number, the more money WIFT will receive.   Do take the time to stop by the Courtesy Booth of your Randalls Store (just once to set it up) and further support WIFT in this manner.

Please contact Volunteer Committee Chair Melody Moss at martinimoss@yahoo.com if you have time to volunteer in any capacity.

Contact your Membership Chair Yankie Grant at yankiegrant@sbcglobal.net, if you would like to refer a new member.

Contact the Membership Directory Chair (print edition) Tina Cohen at tinacohen18@aol.com, if you haven't picked up your 2008 directory yet.  She lives in Bellaire and you can make arrangements to meet her.

Join the Breakfast RAP! group when you can spare the time.  These sessions are really going well. They're casual, friendly,  and fun--small enough to get to know one another.  It's the second Tuesday of each month.

I look forward to seeing you Tuesday, August 19th at our "SIZZLE & BUZZ" Networking event at Locke Bryan Productions.   Be your best, always, and stay cool.

Sincerely,
Jolene McMaster

TXMPA ANNOUNCEMENTS
LETTER FROM BOB HUDGINS, DIRECTOR, TEXAS FILM COMMISSION
Folks, the legislative season is upon us. Long before the session begins in January, much work has already been done -- and there's a great deal yet to be done -- toward making Texas' incentive program more competitive, and regaining some of the ground that Texas has lost. The only way to revise the system is through legislative action, and if it doesn't happen this session, it will be two years before we have another chance.

If you work in any capacity on films of any stripe; television; commercials; corporate videos; music videos; animation; or video games, you need to help us make these changes happen. You may wonder what these different production types have in common. First, they all create visual content. Secondly, they're portable industries, with no need for factories or big infrastructure to create their products, and that's why this industry can be so severely impacted by incentives offered in other states. If you offer a competitive incentive, they will come. That's been solidly proven elsewhere, at Texas' expense.

Changes will not happen without the involvement of those who work in this industry. And unfortunately, most of you have not been involved: you haven't yet joined the Texas Motion Picture Alliance.

Quite frankly, we don't have the luxury of any more time for people to think that others will take care of participating in the process. It is up to you, and you can do it right now. Join the TXMPA, participate in its calls to action, and maybe you won't have to take a job in Louisiana ever again. If you can't be bothered to help your own cause, believe me, the legislature won't bother either.

Bob Hudgins
Texas Film Commission

Excerpt from a LETTER FROM THE NEW TXMPA PRESIDENT DON STOKES
"It is my honor to be the newly elected President of TXMPA.  Thanks to the leadership provided by past Presidents, Hector Garcia and Meredith Stephens, and the current and past board members of our organization we have established TXMPA as an effective advocate for the moving image industry in Texas.

"I am involved in this endeavor for many reasons.  I grew up in this industry and have been working in it for most of my life.  I love what I do and I love our industry.  I've lived through the era when Texas earned and deserved the title of "the third coast" and I've struggled and survived through lean times when work destined for Texas has been pulled away by incentives offered elsewhere.  I want to see these projects return to Texas and I want to be a part of making it happen.  Simply put, I am involved because I have to be and I hope you realize in order for it to happen you have to be, too."

Please go to www.txmpa.org, for the complete letter, and if you haven't already become a dues paying member, please help the organization and yourself out now, by doing so.  It's $50 well spent.
