WIFT's 13th Birthday Celebration is in the making, so stay alert for new updates. The occasion provides the perfect opportunity to say a sincere and well-deserved THANK YOU and show our appreciation to our Immediate Past President CYNTHIA HAND NEELY (2000-2008) for her long-standing service and dedication to the organization, a period that spans a decade.
Thanks also to her family for sharing her with the organization for these many years. We know you also deserve thanks, and we hope you will join us for this celebration.
The occasion is also a time to remind us of the valued service of each of our past presidents: Founding President Melody Moss, followed by Merideth Melville, Linda Lowe, and Gudrun Klein. We hope they, too, will be in attendance. Getting here from Germany may be a bit difficult for Gudrun, however. |

Cristina's Court Wins Emmy!
The Hollywood Reporter wrote, "Cristina's Court, now in its second season, beat out long-running gavelers Judge Judy and The People's Court, among others."
Cristina's Court, nationally syndicated and taped at Fox 26 in Houston, won a Daytime Emmy, a first-time win in this new category, "Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program."
The award occurred in front of a grand audience, including Barbara Walters, Regis Philbin, Tyra Banks, Ellen Degeneres, Montel Williams, and many, many more celebrities. Congratulations go out to everyone who worked on the show, especially two WIFT members Robin Craig, Coordinating Producer, who booked and produced the Emmy-winning case, and Michelle Fitzgerald, who is another of the show's producers. (Robin can be seen standing to the Judge's left, and Michelle was unable to attend.)
It's a thrilling win for Cristina's Court, for Houston, and for WIFT members. A highly enthused Robin Craig said, "Let's continue to show the world that Houston has what it takes!" Keep those Emmy's coming.

Message from the President
You Make A Critical Difference!
We've reached the half-way point of 2008. WIFT Houston has a new President and Vice President, and both are very excited about moving forward. Additionally, we have a Long Range Planning Committee in place that's dedicated to advancing the organization forward, with your help. You, our valued member, now must give some thought as to how you can also be more involved, and better connected. Regular events require thought, time, and action.
WIFT Houston's future lies in the hands of its members, and this is your chance to participate. Committees are being formed, many of which will require your dedicated participation to help carry out the goals and responsibilities of each. Join a committee now.

Co-Chair: Jolene McMaster
These opportunities and more await you now:
Hospitality Chair -- We cannot have events without someone who knows how to plan the minute details, and can work within a budget.
WIFT Houston Celebrity Golf Tournament -- Karron Wardwell has been doing the behind-the-scenes planning on this for three years. Now all we need are sponsors and about 70 volunteers. Karron is looking for individuals to head up a task force of many to execute this tournament, and make it into a successful annual happening in Houston. Golf doesn't have to be "your game." For the membership, it's more about planning for success than it is playing the game.
Back-Up Professional Photographer -- There are times when our Official Photographer Heather Leigh Jackson will not be available, and there may be times when she needs extra help. The organization needs an additional photographer to step forward. Like the many other tasks handled by our members, this is volunteer position. We acknowledge with much thanks for all the help that we've received, and will continue to receive from our corporate member Photographic Design Lab and its talented partners Heather Leigh Jackson and Sanjay Patel.
Please contact me, or any of the members named
above depending on where you can help, because without your involvement now, all the gains of the
last few years could evaporate.

This awareness may show us where we can improve our own offerings to redirect future business. Marc has furnished these links for your interest and review from neighboring Lafayette:

SECTION 181 UPDATE
If you attended "The Reel Deal" at CenterPoint Energy on April 24, you met our new friend from Chicago, Hal "Corky" Kessler, with the law firm of Levin Ginsburg. Here's an updated report from him on Section 181:
The U.S. House of Representatives passed the extender bill which included a modification to and an extension of Section 181. The extender package went to the House of Representatives for a vote and was passed by the House in May 2008. It is supposed to go before the Senate in June 2008 for a vote but we are waiting for the Senate to "get it together" in that regard. The Senate cannot currently get enough votes to even have it come before the Senate floor for a debate.
