Technology: friend and foe
I've recently been delving deeper into the power of the smartphone. Every month I discover new apps that create new opportunities. For one client I'm building a team to create the ultimate Localism App. It'll make taking part in the planning debate spontaneous, relevant and most importantly fun for everyone. I've also discovered SQUARE:CODE™ which is like a QR code with depth. It's the product of a brilliant Norfolk company and means you can use the code to build a two way relationship with clients and customers. In my case, it will be readers of my books. The first book to carry one will be out in June. Readers will be able to keep scanning the code to get the latest tips, which I will post in response to what I'm seeing, learning and thinking. SQUARE:CODE™, Twitter and websites will increasingly enable us to share information, opinion and comment seamlessly. We're only just starting to see what can be done. Tomorrow's world is going to be extraordinary, exciting and increasingly, online. In a matter of seconds a breaking news story can be "trending" on Twitter - which can be welcoming and terrifying at the same time. Gaddafi's death was first announced on Twitter and the same platform has seen badly executed marketing campaigns (notably, #McDStories) backfire in the same amount of time it takes for you to Tweet, 'Just had lunch'. I'm keen to hear stories from you about how social marketing has helped you, or held you back. Email them to me - I promise I won't share them with #campaignsgonewrong. Follow me @robertashton1

| Desks to rent - Attleborough/Wymondham |
We've converted our two empty offices into more accommodating spaces for smaller businesses. If you're looking to start a business, move out from the home office, or simply fancy a change of scenery then Turnpike Farm Business Centre could be the ideal setting for you.
Currently there's two desks to rent in the downstairs 233 sq ft office and three upstairs in the 247 sq ft office. A desk costs just £45 + VAT per week.
The building itself is a Grade 2 listed converted farmhouse surrounded by open fields and is close to the A11 so has good transport links (10 minutes from Attleborough and Wymondham, and 8 minutes from the Thickthorn interchange).
For further information visit the Turnpike Farm website or call Jess on

In the last ezine I revealed that my Copywriting in a Week book from Hodder had been given a new life - and the new edition is now out to buy from Amazon. Order your copy here and if you leave a review, I'll send one reviewer chosen at random a signed copy of How to be a Social Entrepreneur, Make Money & Change the World. Remember to tell me you've reviewed it so I can contact you if I need your address!
-----------------------------------------------------
2003 edition reviews from Amazon;
"Copywriting in a Week" is a clear and concise way to find out more about how to improve your copywriting skills. From the use of layout, pictures and words to communicating with the media, the book gives enough information to increase your confidence without overloading you. I would recommend it to anyone who is new to copywriting and wants to cover the basics well.
-
At last a book on copy-writing which is not simply full of its own importance. A book that helps take the writing demons away and shows a route to copy writing in a commanding manner. This book can give you tips and hints and lead you to question how you write and where the emphasis should lie.
-----------------------------------------------------
My next book to be published this year is a second edition of How to Start Your Own Business; for Entrepreneurs. Published by Prentice Hall, it will become available to buy from May 8th but you can pre-order your copy from Amazon today from here.
And if two books aren't enough for you, there's also the online business start-up course I'm writing for Pearson. It will be launched in the Spring but they've got courses online now with demos you can try out for free to give you a bit of a taster of what's in store. www.lovetolearn.co.uk
