Barefoot Business News from Robert Ashton

Making enterprise enjoyable

The past three months have seen post graduate marketer Tobe Okechukwu conducting some very intuitive, informed research. He's looked into my life, my work and my world. He's interviewed people who know me. He's researched those who do similar things and he's helped me see myself in a new and different way.

Now it's your turn to see the new me. I've gone barefoot and decided with Tobe's help that now it really is time to truly be me.

New look: Barefoot!
A footBarefoot means far more than business without socks. It means being subtle, sensitive and suitable to succeed in our changing world. Barefoot also means being in touch, quite literally with the natural world, with our own limitations and the vulnerabilities of those around us.

There will be barefoot business events, at which everyone will strip from the ankles down. Feeling different is the first step to doing different. Doing things differently is increasingly what success in enterprise is all about.

See me talk about barefoot here.

Coming out as a social entrepreneur
Welland Bootcampers Social entrepreneurs change society in enterprising ways. Social enterprise is just one of those ways. As a social entrepreneur I am a catalyst for sustainable social change. Ask me how if you think I can help you do the same.

Much of my work is with social enterprises. Too many are started by people who are not social entrepreneurs. They start their enterprises in response to rising need and falling funding. They care, they have passion but they need help to become really enterprising.

If you're based in the eastern region you may qualify for a 70% grant to fund a place on my new 'Practical Marketing Programme'.

Coming out crazy
Sandy NaimanMy friend Sandy Naiman is a journalist in Toronto. Like me she lives with depression, a condition we both feel gives us greater insight, greater empathy and at times, greater anxiety than most. Sandy's super blog with the 'Toronto Star' is called 'Coming Out Crazy'.

I was asked by The People to be their health and lifestyle mental health blogger. You can read it here. You can also subscribe to an RSS feed and comment.

Mental health is one of the last taboos, yet its impact on enterprise in all its forms can be massive. I'm happy to come out to your audience and share my top tips on keeping each other well at work.

Big Society = Big opportunity
Village greenOur Government's commitment to give communities real ownership of local resources and facilities presents new and exciting opportunities. However helping communities regain control as 'Big Society' allows is not as easy as it first appears.

I've been working with two for the past few months. One a rural village seeking to reconcile their vision with that of potential funders and the other, involving a community hospital, has reached the point where we are applying for investment from the Social Enterprise Investment Fund.

If you're trying to translate 'Big Society' into a big opportunity for your community, let's compare notes. I might be able to help you see the wood for the trees.

Email me and we'll see what I can do for you.
