Facts, Legend & Lore
February-Traditional Birthstone
Greetings!
This month we are featuring the gemstone Amethyst, which is the accepted birthstone for the month of February.  It is also the accepted anniversary gemstone for the sixth year of marriage and (according to Greek legend) believed to prevent intoxication.   We suggest that you don't test this attribute;  especially while driving or operating heavy machinery!
Amethyst Comes In Shades of Purple
amethyst_octagonAmethyst is a variety of quartz, and comes in pale lilac to rich deep purple shades.  Ideally, it is a deep medium purple with rose-colored flashes that give amethyst its beauty and fire.

Because of it's abundance, it is readily available in all sizes and shapes.  It is durable and can be worn every day.
Amethyst Legend & Lore
loose_trill-cut amethyst Amethyst was said to have a sobering effect on the wearer--not only those who indulged but on those over-excited by loves passion as well.  It has symbolized peace, protection and tranquility.  Some say it will prevent baldness and improve the complexion, as well as protect from treason and deceit.  Because royalty has always adored the color purple, amethysts abound in the ornaments of ancient Greeks and Egyptians, and in the British Crown Jewels.
Amethysts are found in the U.S., Brazil, Russia, Uruguay and Zambia.

birthstone
Just aMR1600/5_mothers ringbout everyone knows what their birthstone is.
Why is that? Because people still enjoy the folklore associated with the tradition of the birthstone.  They like believing that wearing a birthstone brings them good luck and protects them.
Early civilization as far back as the Assyrians (1400 BC) invested rare and beautiful gemstones with magical properties. Some minerals were thought to contain a force or possess certain values and powers.  For instance, amethyst was thought to prevent intoxication.  Tradition associates a gem with each sign of the zodiac based on a color system.  Color was thought to unleash the power attributed to the stone.  In time, birthstones became associated with calendar months rather than the zodiac.
