Meth Labs .. recap of March Lunch
This is a brief recap of information shared by speaker Dennis Lowe of the  Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

balloons
Common items found in homes and business are the necessary ingredients to make meth.  Items such as mason jars, 2 liter pop bottles, funnels, coffee filters, tubing from fish tanks, balloons, lasagna pans, duct tape, etc. are what meth dealers and addicts purchase or steal to set up a meth lab.

Meth is a highly addictive stimulant that looks like cocaine, is priced like cocaine and can be snorted, injected or smoked.  Cocaine gives you a 45 minute to 2 hour high.  Meth highs last 8 - 24 hours.

Some short term effects include, insomnia, weight loss, paranoia, intense eu
phoria, aggressive behavior and grinding of teeth.  Long term include dry itchy skin, uncontrolled twitching, impaired speech, extreme body temperature, etc.  Meth users are any age (14-60)  and live everywhere.

In 2000 only 18 labs were seized in Ohio.  2009 found 349 seized labs.  Numbers continue to grow.  Majority of labs are "stumbled on" while stopping cars for traffic violations, during trash collection and when social workers are checking on homes.

To the untrained eye many homes appear cluttered or dirty, a sign of a "bad housekeeper".  However once you know what to look for, items, like those listed above, will begin to stand out.  Look for numerous purchases or disappearance of flammable solvents, peroxide, drain cleaners, large quantities of matchbooks (red phosphorous) and over the counter allergy and cold medicines containing pseudoephedrine.

Meth can be made anywhere from the trunk of a car to a hotel room. Signs of a container containing meth would be if it has both solid & liquid in it. (excluding vinegar & oil salad dressing)

If you should every encounter an area that you feel could be part of a meth lab or potential drug involvement -  DO NOT TOUCH, SMELL OR OPEN anything. Call the authorities immediately.

Urgent Care Ribbon CuttingGrand Openings

The Chamber is pleased to announce the Grand Opening of Hometown Urgent Care, located next to Giant Eagle on Hamilton Road.  We welcome Tony from Hometown and Jamie Coburn of CareWorks USA, both new chamber members.

Many of you joined us for the grand opening of the new Diley Ridge Medical Center earlier in March.  Be sure to let your staff know that along with medical offices and the emergency room, the Children's Close to Home Unit is also up and running.  It's wonderful to have this great facility in our neighborhood.

I would welcome feed back on our first newsletter edition using Constant Contact.  If you haven't checked out the web site lately, you're missing events posted by members, hot deals and legislative updates, etc.   Thank you for your continued support of the SEFC Chamber.
