Ian King - 30 Years in the profession
1980-2010
 

2010 is another milestone year for us, as it marks the 30th year of involvement for myself professionally in physical preparation. During 2010 you will see a number of activities and artifacts to commemorate this milestone. In this first issue of the Between Sets newsletter for 2010, and the 101st issue of Between Sets, I will share with you a brief overview of this 30 year journey.

 

1980 - Commenced university studies in the field

 

1982 - Commenced membership of the USA NSCA.

 

1986 - When my client numbers hit about 100 national and international level athletes, I decided it was time to get more with my business structures and I began trading under a corporation. We trade under that same corporation to date, having used some variations on the trading names.

 

1988 - Obtained USA CSCS

 

1988 - 1995 - Served as Executive Director and State Director (Qld) for the Australasian chapter of the NSCA, which changed names to the Australian NSCA and then to the Australian Strength & Conditioning Association (ASCA).

 

1989 - Commenced using computers for program design etc. First study tour of North America, first NSCA USA National Convention.

 

1995 - Released first KSI DVD, the Ian King's Guide to Stretching.

 

1998 -  Released first 2 day seminar on Video, the Strength Specialization, sharing original concepts such as lines of movement, family tree, control drills, why use external load before exploiting bodyweight etc.

 

1998 - First seminar tour of the USA

 

1999 - Commenced one of the first online courses in this industry providing foundational professional development, titled the 'Foundations of Physical Preparation'. This was the forerunner for the current KSI Coach Intern Program. The content of this course has found its way unauthorized published in a number of books, the most as recent as 2009.

 

1999 - Began releasing innovative and original training concepts online via internet magazines, including the concept of using bodyweight as a initial and viable alternative to loading for the purposes of hypertrophy, strength and rehab training - through paradigm shifting programs such as the 'Limping' series of strength training programs on what was then t-mag.com.

 

1999 - Published ground breaking books - the first Get Buffed!™ book for the end user (the exercise descriptions alone from that book have been copied without consent in over 10 publications) and So You Want to Become a Strength & Conditioning Coach, the first professional/financial/business/personal development book published in the industry, the content of which has been Imitated over the subsequent years right down to the title.

 

1999 - Commenced offering Boot Camps for professional development, the first of its kind in physical preparation. This influence came from the personal development industry. Within a few years this concept has been imitated by others in the North American market.

 

1999-2006 - Published a wide range of articles over a 7 year period on t-mag.com, providing a substantial body of information which has been first hand as well as second hand (others publishing claiming credit) added value to lives of so many around the world.

 

2000/2001 - Published a 6 issue series of strength programs in US Men's Health magazine which rated the highest ever in the segment of the magazines history.

 

2001 - Commenced offering Internships that were more than 'stay at my facility for a week/weeks/months and paint my plates'. We innovated and offered an integration of education mixing stay at home and travel to a central location as well as various mediums - internet, phone, in person etc. Within a few years this concept has been imitated by others in the North American market.

 

2002 - Released the sequel to Get Buffed!™ ™ the book.

 

2003 - The Book of Muscle (BOM) was published by Rodale (Men's Health) in the USA, and in the absence of any substantial marketing only narrowly missed out on genuinely making the NY Times best selling list (as opposed those who loosely claim their book is a 'best seller'). The BOM has since re-printed in a UK version with a title variation, a Korean version, and a German version.

 

2003 - Commenced offering mentorships, again an industry first, innovated independent of any other models. Within a few years this concept has been imitated by others in the North American market.

 

2004 - Published the 3rd book in the Get Buffed!™  sequel, creating the first trilogy of in this sector. Commenced using a central location for our annual athlete and coach training camp, now heading towards our 7th year at this location.

 

2005 - Published the first book of philosophy on physical preparation. Within that year this concept of 'developing your own philosophy' was imitated by others in the North American market.

 

2006 - Marked 20 years of providing the same service - athlete preparation to elite athletes and coach education. 2011 will mark 25 years of continual business service. This consistency and longevity alone sets KSI apart. During this time we have serviced athletes over six Olympic cycles.

 

2007 - Published the forth sequel to the Get Buffed!™  book range, making it the only book range in the sector with 4 books in a sequential content range.

 

2008 - Completed the transfer of KSI Videos to DVD - an enormous task with over 100 hours of edited footage available.

 

2009 - Published the Barbells & Bullshit seminar DVD and Audio series, the first expose of its kind in physical preparation into the conspiracy of misinformation and manipulation of your thinking.

 

One of the slogans we use is 'leading the world in physical preparation', and another saying we often use is 'doing today what other's will do tomorrow'. As you can see from the above, for 30 years now I have been servicing the athlete and coach in a way that has resulted in many to imitate. Purchasing the knock-off version can often lead to disappointment.

Sharpen Your Mind
 

To those who have either tired of the merry-go-round of mainstream marketing bullshit, or those who perhaps due to instinctual perceptiveness bypass this mass behavior, and seek material resonant for its message, rather than influenced because that is what so many others are or appear to be doing...

I say when the wise speak, listen. I understand this is easier said than done, as your senses are cluttered with marketing claims of 'the best in the world', 'internationally renowned', 'gets results faster than anyone' and other usually self appointed adjectives aimed at creating the perception of greatness.

If you have followed my work long enough you would have realized that relative to this marketing largess  engaged in by many, we say little and do a lot. That is our goal. Not only to under promise and over deliver, but to sacrifice short term gain on the marketing merry-go-round to indentify the truly committed , whose paths, journey and search has resulted in them knocking on the door of KSI. Rather than a red flashing light drawing the masses for short term visits and a quick emptying of the pockets.

That's my disclaimer. Now for the message.

It is rare when the wise speak, especially those consciously or otherwise influenced by Taoism.  For at this level of consciousness, it is often considered that 'he who cannot do teaches';, or 'he who doesn't speak and he who speaks doesn't know'; or  'the loudest trumpet is often the emptiest vessel'.  (In some cases in this industry it is difficult to deny these ancient wisdoms!)

For those who are ready to go beyond the BS of mainstream marketing -I am going to give you an opportunity to learn from a man who I describe as wise and who knows, by his ability to do, at the highest level.  There are two parts to this statement.

Firstly. For those who are ready to go beyond the mainstream BS. I have learnt through my years of being a student and observer that it's easy to get attention. Stand on the sidewalk and look up and point at something in the sky. Someone will wonder what you are doing and do the same. The more that do this, the more feel they too should be doing this.

Anyone willing to talk crap, be sensationalist and use other techniques or claims to gain attention can taken advantage of this human nature. If you are still at that stage of discerning where this seems the way to go, you may not be ready. I speak to those who have either tired of the merry-go-round of mainstream marketing bullshit, or those who perhaps due to instinctual perceptiveness bypass this mass behavior, and seek material resonant for its message, rather than influenced because that is what so many others are or appear to be doing.

Secondly, you are constantly being told by excellent marketers in this industry about their greatness, so I choose my words carefully. I do not want to align or associate with this shallow, self-serving but highly seductive word selection.  I will scrape by with this statement - I have been a student professional for nearly 3 decades and a student for life of performance in sport.  I have worked with and achieved success with athletes at a volume and frequency few have the opportunity to do. I can spot the bullshit from the real deal. Enough said? (if I continue I fear I might get too revealing about the relationship between your perception of greatness as created by marketing, and actual competency based on historically measureable events...)

There are very few who seek excellence. Most seek to serve the ego, and this gets in the way of excellence.  There is no correlation between marketing and competence. You will hear me say that time and time again. (So much so that I suspect my best imitator could be making this statement as their own in just a few months!)

Mitchell - I loved the interview!  For me, to hear all that I've studied from KSI stated from an experiential and practical point of view, the end user athlete, is a wonderful kickoff to your audio series.  I've been absorbed in the abstract of theory quite long such that the concretes from your athlete in terms of results, before and after KSI, were very dramatic. 

 

One thing grabbed me, Mitch, a 1 ½ hr. stretching session before lower body w/o?  My KSI educated guess would be that was what this particular athlete needed at that particular time?

Q. I am confused between purchasing the book 'Muscle' and 'The Book of Muscle'. A friend has 'Muscle' and I have been attempting to purchase it (without success) but I have found the 'The Book of Muscle'. Can you tell me what the difference is between the books, if any? Thanks,

A. Brad - we believe the book titled 'Muscle' may be the version published. In the UK by Mens Health UK. The 'Book of Muscle' is the American version, snd the one usually seen sold in Australia. Apart from the title, we know of no differences.
