The KSI Between Sets Newsletter
Issue No. 93, Jul-Aug 2008 |
|
Greetings!
There is a saying 'the more things change the more they stay the same'. With some of the changes I have been noticing lately I am not so sure if this saying applies. I share my thoughts on this in an article in this issue titled 'Are the goal posts moving?'
Also in this issue of 'Between Sets' Coach Kochonda discusses some very interesting aspects of the attitude 'Who should I see to fix my injury?'; Coach Pimentel draws your attention to the role of measuring your progress in training with his article 'Do you measure?"; and Coach Pobega shares his experiences in coaching the competitive athlete.
There's been a number of new developments from KSI and we bring you up to date with a few of them below in the 'What's New' Section.
It's just 2 weeks to go before the KSI coaches and athletes come together for our 5th Annual International get-together. Amazing learning will occur at this event!
Enough talk. Let's do it. Ian King
Are the goal posts moving?
by Ian King
Have you noticed things might be changing at a more rapid pace lately? Are you seeing things you thought you would never see?
For those of the baby boomer generation (born between 1946 and 1964) and older may remember a time of less rapid change. If it was promoted that squats were bad for your knees (as it was by 'science' from about the 1960s) then you would expect that perspective would stay for a long time - like 30-40 years, as was the case for the reputation of squatting.
But what if most of what the majority believed was to be revealed as not so? How would you handle this? Have you been thinking and acting like the masses, or have you been sharing my values and thinking for yourself? Here's an example - Read more Who should I see to fix this injury? by Mitchell Kochonda This past week I was talking casually with a couple of people and a young mother of two said her neck/trap area was hurting her. I 'guessed' what side was paining her and said 'it's not hard to see why' and shared the concept of the 'body not lying'. Meaning you can say what you want in relation to your training, an injury, a perception you have about yourself, etc, but bottom line - the body doesn't lie! I passed on a few brief pointers to assist her in overcoming this little challenge. She then asked "who should I see to fix this? A physio or a Chiro?" So I asked her a few brief questions - Read more
Do you measure?
by Mike Pimentel
We've just past the halfway mark in the year - 6 months left in 2008. How are you going on the goals you set for yourself 6 months ago? Are you achieving what you set to do? Are you ahead in the game? Are you behind? How would you know? The answer to the last question is - Read more
What I've learnt about coaching competitive athletes by Jason Pobega
Besides being a CMP KSI coach, I also am varsity football (a.k.a. Gridiron, Pigskin, and American Football) coach as well. My players are ages 17-20. I've had 8 years experience in coaching Football, 2008 being my first as a Head Coach, and have enjoyed every minute of my journey.
What makes this interesting is how KSI has changed my style and my awareness for the better in coaching these young athletes - Read more

During these three days successful applicants will be given the opportunity to be trained by KSI coaches, and participate in a challenge to determine the 'KSI Champion Athlete 2008'. This will be determined on a holistic assessment, not simply a physical one. That's all we will share at this point re the challenge. Applications are invited from current KSI clients who train seriously in any physical sport or endeavor. You must have a strong commitment to training and achieving your goals. Preference will be given to KSI forum members and those who have shown a prior commitment to developing their training through the KSI way. If you would like to be sent out an application form email us with a request to have one sent out to you via email. In this email please outline your involvement with KSI and how you have been implementing the KSI way in your training. The camp will be held between Mon 25 and Wed 27 August 2008 inclusive. Successful applicants will be able to secure this opportunity with a nominal registration fee only, providing an incredible opportunity for those who are selected.

Vitamins for the Mind
KSI's holistic approach to coach education places significant focus on personal development. One of our mentors that we recommend to others is Jim Rohn, America's leading business philosopher. He has an amazing ability to say so much in so few words. Here's an example of that:
Results
Results are the best measurement of human progress. Not conversation. Not explanation. Not justification. Results! And if our results are less than our potential suggests that they should be, then we must strive to become more today than we were the day before. The greatest rewards are always reserved for those who bring great value to themselves and the world around them as a result of who and what they have become. --Jim Rohn
