Greetings!

September promises to be an exciting month for ASA-OK.  We continue to implement the three-legged stool concept of our membership services -- education, advocacy and networking.

Our advocacy efforts will take center stage on September 30th when ASA-OK holds it first ever Legislative Policymaking Summit and Grassroots Symposium presented by Fennell & Associates.  I encourage all members to attend this Summit as it will be the foundation of ASA-OK's legislative efforts in next year's state legislative session.  And remember that every dollar of the registration fee will be used solely for our advocacy efforts.

September is the second month of the new Monthly Study Group breakfast series in both Oklahoma City and Tulsa.  Last month we saw each session reach its maximum capacity and we expect the same this month as David Walls and Eric Daffern teach on the contract clause "payment terms."

The annual ASA webinar series kicks off this month and ASA-OK will host each webinar in the "Focus on Success" series.  In Tulsa the webinars will be hosted at the Pray Walker law firm, and in Oklahoma City Rich & Cartmill will host the webinars.  The September subject is "Managing Change Orders."  By attending the ASA-OK hosting of the webinar you save on the cost of purchasing the webinar, get lunch, and have the opportunity to network with other ASA-OK members and discuss the issue on a local basis.

And of course our monthly membership meetings continue to provide a tremendous amount of education.  This month we will hear from OSHA at both the Tulsa dinner meeting and the Oklahoma City lunch meeting.

I want to remind those who have not yet renewed their 2011-12 membership that September is the last month to do so without the loss of any member benefits.  If you have not renewed your membership yet, please do so right away or contact Mark Nestlen with regard to your 2011-12 dues payment.

This month I have the pleasure of welcoming several new members -- Brown & Brown Insurance, CorVel Corp, D&D Interiors, Godwin Formwork Solutions, HK&S Iron Company, L&W Supply, Norick & Heightley, RLI Surety and Streets, LLC.  We look forward to working with each of you and encourage you to take advantage of all that ASA-OK has to offer.

Sincerely,

Tami Hasselwander, ASA-OK President

ASA-OK Hosts September Webinar --Managing Change Orders

ASA kicks off its 2011-12 "Focus for Success" webinar series with "Managing Change Orders" on September 13th. This live, 90-minute webinar will begin at 11:00 am CDT and conclude at 12:30 pm with an additional 15 minutes of local Oklahoma discussion until 12:45 pm.

In Tulsa, ASA-OK will host the webinar at the law offices of Pray Walker in downtown Tulsa.  And in Oklahoma City, the webinar will be hosted at the Rich & Cartmill offices.

Change orders can be a double-edged sword. The webinar will be led by Robert Pratt, FCPE, President of Demand Construction Inc. from Centennial, Colorado.  He will instruct on how to better use the language contained in contracts and how to increase a company's effectiveness in identifying and processing profitable changes.

The webinar lunch cost is $20.  This includes a box lunch and is a savings of $79 from what it would cost to subscribe to the webinar at your office.  And best of all by attending the ASA-OK webinar event, you are able to network with other ASA-OK members and discuss the issue from a local perspective!

September Monthly Study Group to Focus on Payment Terms

ASA-OK is continuing its new educational programming series called Monthly Study Groups.  Once a month an ASA-OK member attorney will host in their office a one-hour session on one contract clause.  The OKC Monthly Study Group meets for breakfast on the second Friday of each month from 7:00 to 8:00 am, and the Tulsa Monthly Study Group meets for breakfast on the third Friday of each month from 7:00 to 8:00 am.

Members are encouraged to participate in this unique offering by sending their staff person in charge of contract reviews.  There is no cost to ASA-OK members for the program, but there will be a limit of 15 participants in each class in order to facilitate good hands-on education and discussion.

The contract clause for September is "Payment Terms."  David Walls and Michelle Campney will teach the class in Oklahoma City on September 9th, and Eric Daffern is the instructor in Tulsa on September 16th.

Only a handful of seats remain in both September classes.  Click on Oklahoma City to register for its class, and on Tulsa to register for its class.

ASA-OK to Hold September 30th Policymaking Summit

ASA-OK will hold its Legislative Policymaking Summit & Grassroots Symposium presented by Fennell & Associates on Friday, September 30th from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm at the Jim Thorpe Association and Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City.  This is an opportunity for all ASA-OK members to raise concerns and seek solutions to legislative and regulatory issues impacting their business.

The purpose of the Legislative Policymaking Summit is to provide a forum for all ASA-OK members to address any and all legislative and regulatory issues of concern that impact subcontractors in the state of Oklahoma.  ASA-OK intends to use the input and recommendations received during the discussion to formulate policies and legislative initiatives for the 2012 state legislative session.

Nothing effects your business as much as government policy.  Laws and regulations impact every element of your day-to-day activity.  During the morning session sponsored by Rich & Cartmill, the Grassroots Symposium is your chance to learn how to effectively impact state legislation and regulations.  Former Oklahoma State Senate Minority Leader Jim Dunlap will let you know the most effective ways to communicate with state lawmakers.  His inside knowledge of the State Capitol will help you shape the laws that impact your business.

Speakers for the day include Sen. Dan Newberry (Majority Whip & Chairman of the Business & Commerce Committee), Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb, Gov. Mary Fallin (invited), and Attorney General Scott Pruitt (invited).  Additionally there will be a number of resource people involved during the day of debate including Labor Commissioner Mark Costello and Insurance Commissioner John Doak.

The draft agenda is listed below.  Click here to register for the event!  Please note that a small registration fee is being charged and that every dollar of that registration fee will be used by ASA-OK solely for the purpose of funding legislative and advocacy effort on behalf of the subcontractors in the state of Oklahoma.
