Congratulations to Rita Simo, long time Uptown activist and founder of the Peoples Music School, on being awarded the Premio Nacional Dominican & Presente by the President of the Dominican Republic. This award is presented by the President to people from the Dominican Republic who have brought honor to the country and its people. Rita will receive the award in the Dominican Republic, where she is travelling with her husband, Tomas Bissonnette.

Illinois Smoke Free Act As you are probably already aware, on January 1, 2008 the Illinois Smoke Free Act took effect and banned smoking in almost all public places. This new law impacts businesses such as bars, restaurants that have not already gone some free, tobacco retailers, and those businesses that were programmed to go smoke free in July 2008. You can download three pdf documents with information that will help your business comply with these new rules: SFIA letter to businesses, SFIA tips, SFIA facts sheet Free Card Hard ID Class Attend a free State Of Illinois CARD HARD ID class to teach your staff how to identify fake ID's. There are two classes: February 5 at 6pm or February 26 at 4pm. The classes will be an hour long and be held at the 23rd District Community Policing Room at 3608 N. Halsted.
