Tony's Coaching Tip Just Feel Better
June 2007

Greetings!

Welcome to the June 2007 issue of Tony's Coaching Tip.

Not that much to report this month. No marathons, no jury service and no trips abroad. I did go to a reception given by Demelza House, the childrens hospice charity that I ran the London Marathon for in April. That was very moving, and also uplifting, to see the work they do for children with life-limiting illnesses. My final (almost) fundraising figure stands at 1,241, so once again thank you to everyone who sponsored me.

As is more often the case than not, I turned on my computer this morning to start putting my coaching tip together without any idea what I was going to write. I happened to also fire up iTunes at the same time and the first song that came up was the Santana song "Just Feel Better". The lyrics were the inspiration for this month's tip.

If you like the tip, forward it on. If you hate it, keep it under your hat.

"Manage Yourself, Manage Your Life: Simple NLP Techniques for Success and Happiness" by Ian McDermott and Ian Shircore. Another extremely practical book from Ian McDermott, this time with another co-author. I particularly liked the middle section of the book on Beginnings, Transitions and Endings, but then the other parts were really good too. *****

So why are you still getting caught in the same old patterns of behaviour?

You've created the empowering vision of where you want to be and when you picture it, it's very exciting.

When you look back, you can remember times when you had some fantastic successes, and when you think of yourself in action at those times you realise that you do have a lot of potential that you don't often give yourself credit for.

But yet, you're still here doing the same things that have kept you exactly where you are for a long, long time. So what is going on?

I have a theory that Success = Destination Vision + Potential - Limiting Beliefs.

Now it's probably not news to you that you have limiting beliefs. They've been very familiar to you for a large proportion of your life. You have even spent time working out what they are, and telling yourself that they are just your gremlin, your saboteur, your internal dialogue and not the real you.

But even though logic says that you've sorted that out and addressed those beliefs, they still come back, and come back, and .....

So what does it take to actually break through a pattern of behaviour brought about by limiting beliefs?

Firstly, you need to acknowledge that your limiting belief served a positive purpose once upon a time. Originally it protected you from going charging out of your safety zone and becoming a figure of ridicule and looking stupid. You also need compassion for yourself for hanging on to this belief for so long. Self criticism at this point won't be helpful.

You need courage, determination and the single- mindedness to break the pattern of behaviour. This will only happen when you realise that enough is enough and you really are willing to address it. There is no place for toleration now unless you want to come back to this old familiar place yet again.

Finally, choose an action and then act. This is not a time for planning. Planning will give you the opportunity to water down what you know you need to do and, from experience, this is a slippery slope.

    So the big question is:

"Are you prepared to think about, logicalise and then tolerate your key limiting belief for just a little bit longer?"

    or

"Are you ready to address your key limiting belief now and move beyond your existing limits?"

Thanks for reading. The next issue will be on the 4th of July.

    Until next time,

    Tony
