Tony's Coaching Tip Thank you for the music
June 2006

Greetings!

Welcome to the June 2006 issue of Tony’s Coaching Tip.

As you receive this I will be sunning myself (weather permitting) in Cyprus. Talk about spontaneity. Two days before we left we hadn’t decided to take a holiday, but by tea time it was all arranged and booked, the next day my daughter’s school was notified and pet accommodation was sorted for our dog and rat (yes, I did say rat). The day after that we were gone (hopefully, because I’m writing this the evening before departure).

It’s been an exciting month for me, even though my orthopaedic specialist has banned me from running now until September. I have managed to swim at least once a week, and have generally ridden my bike to the pool and back as well. Progress is definitely being made on the fitness front.

Another factor in this being an exciting time is how big a part music has played in my life this month. See the following article for a description of the first occasion when music and song featured heavily. The other key event was when a coaching colleague told me about a quote that he had on the home page of his web site. This quote is my quote of the month and also the inspiration for this month’s feature article.

There is no book of the month recommendation this month as the books I have completed have only been OK and I didn't feel that any warranted a recommendation. Hopefully, with my week in the sun I will find plenty of material to revive the book recommendation for next month's tip.

I hope you enjoy the tip this month.

    Fleetwood Mac

June the 8th saw me participating in the property industry’s annual charity fundraising event, Party Near the Park. Four colleagues and I brought Fleetwood Mac back to life by singing “The Chain” from their 1977 album Rumours. I can be seen above in the foreground singing Lindsey Buckingham's part (with wig, costume, the works) and having the time of my life.

I have to say that music has always been a passion for me and I sang and played in a band for a number of years and always loved it. But this was the first time that I had ever sung in front of an audience of 1500 people, and I rediscovered how incredibly important singing and performing is to me. I had the absolute time of my life.

Feature: Thank you for the music

After Party Near the Park, I did the exercise I mentioned in last month's tip several times, writing out my vision on a daily basis. Each time I wrote it, the part that music played seemed to grow stronger in the vision. Then at the beginning of last week I was chatting about music with a coach colleague and good friend of mine, when he happened to mention this month's quote, which he currently has on the home page of his web site.

The effect of hearing and reading this quote had a dramatic effect on me. Although I had heard the quote before, quite a long time ago, the combination of the Party Near the Park and my visioning exercises prior to hearing the quote seemed to intensify it. It was as if Oliver Wendell Holmes was speaking to me directly. I had such a strong sense that there is definitely music in me that has not yet come out and I also felt what at tragedy it would be if I were to never take the chance to express it.

I'm not saying that I am now planning to abandon coaching and start out on the road of becoming a rock star at the tender age of 51. I still don't know exactly how my vision, of music and singing becoming an increasing part in my life, will manifest. But it does not actually matter as long as I'm taking small steps in the direction of my vision. I have already signed up for some vocal training lessons with a friend of mine.

So, a question for you this month

What is the music still in you?

It may have nothing to do with my own experience. For me, what is significant about music is that it is all about self-expression. There are very few times when I feel that I am able to express myself as fully as when I sing. It is just another notch up on the self-expression measurement gauge. So if you are struggling with the previous question, think of a time in your life when you came the closest to fully expressing yourself.

What were you doing at the time?

You'll know when you were self-expressed because it would have been a time when everything felt in alignment. Everything around you was exactly in tune with what you were doing and there was a connection between you and everyone else. It is that time that athletes describe as being "in the zone", when time stands still and you are not even thinking about what you are doing. It's almost like it was happening without you.

Once you have found what it is that can help you fully express yourself, the rest is simple.

How can you get more of it?

You just have to do whatever you need to do to bring more of it into your life. It will be fun, I promise.

Thanks for reading. If you enjoyed this coaching tip why not forward it to a friend or colleague? Next issue on July 26th.

    Until next time,

    Tony

“Many people die with their music still in them. Why is this so? Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live. Before they know it, time runs out.”
