After Party Near the Park, I did the exercise I
mentioned in last month's tip several times, writing
out my vision on a daily basis. Each time I wrote it,
the part that music played seemed to grow stronger
in the vision. Then at the beginning of last week I
was chatting about music with a coach colleague
and good friend of mine, when he happened to
mention this month's quote, which he currently has
on the home page of his web site.
The effect of hearing and reading this quote had a
dramatic effect on me. Although I had heard the
quote before, quite a long time ago, the combination
of the Party Near the Park and my visioning exercises
prior to hearing the quote seemed to intensify it. It
was as if Oliver Wendell Holmes was speaking to me
directly. I had such a strong sense that there is
definitely music in me that has not yet come out and
I also felt what at tragedy it would be if I were to
never take the chance to express it.
I'm not saying that I am now planning to abandon
coaching and start out on the road of becoming a
rock star at the tender age of 51. I still don't know
exactly how my vision, of music and singing becoming
an increasing part in my life, will manifest. But it
does not actually matter as long as I'm taking small
steps in the direction of my vision. I have already
signed up for some vocal training lessons with a
friend of mine.
So, a question for you this month
What is the music still in you?
It may have nothing to do with my own experience.
For me, what is significant about music is that it is all
about self-expression. There are very few times
when I feel that I am able to express myself as fully
as when I sing. It is just another notch up on the
self-expression measurement gauge. So if you are
struggling with the previous question, think of a time
in your life when you came the closest to fully
expressing yourself.
What were you doing at the time?
You'll know when you were self-expressed because
it would have been a time when everything felt in
alignment. Everything around you was exactly in tune
with what you were doing and there was a
connection between you and everyone else. It is
that time that athletes describe as being "in the
zone", when time stands still and you are not even
thinking about what you are doing. It's almost like it
was happening without you.
Once you have found what it is that can help you
fully express yourself, the rest is simple.
How can you get more of it?
You just have to do whatever you need to do to
bring more of it into your life. It will be fun, I promise.
Thanks for reading. If you enjoyed this coaching tip
