FEATURE ARTICLE by Deb Strafuss
Carol Madsen & Deborah Strafuss: AlliancExchange Taking on Your World -- Is a Non-Profit Right for You? |
| |
Future Rainforest Scholars funded by AlliancExchange | I joined the board of AlliancExchange after returning from Ecuador early this year. In working with Carol to put together the history of AlliancExchange, I have begun to explore the role of non-profit as a means of giving back to the world.
One of the common misconceptions about a non-profit is that it is a second choice to developing a business, or that it is not a business. "So if you have an idea that isn't business worthy, go for a nonprofit. This did not seem like a business idea, ..."
These are some of Carol's own words in describing her Alliance journey.
The purpose of a for-profit business is to generate profit, thereby providing daily living and disposable income for those working or invested in it. Businesses do this by providing goods or services in exchange for revenue. Many business owners are invested in improving their world and communities, but they are definitely for profit in their intention, planning, structure, purpose and development.
The purpose of a non-profit is to provide funds, goods, services or support in some way for those who cannot in need. Revenue is generated through contributions, donations, events, grants, sponsorships, etc. It is a culling of disposable income or managed funds through an appeal for a cause. Many for-profit businesses today increase their revenue by supporting a cause, and there is a great market for cause-related entities.
Is a non-profit a business? You bet it is, and a challenging form of business to be undertaken. According to Carol, "sometimes it is daunting, because there is a lot of work," such as the filings required by law both early on and then ongoingly. Finances must be in good order, with transparency. Raising money is a challenge - as Carol notes; " we bring some business ideas into raising money". She also brings business planning into her organization through developing her vision, mission and programs. Prudent financial management and a plan for growth and expansion are also incorporated. Some very important decisions were made early on about form and structure, such as whether to have paid staff or an all-volunteer organization. Alliance chose the latter. Says Carol:"we focused on being a successful all-volunteer nonprofit."
How to get your non-profit off the ground? Carol used a home-based start-up. "Early on we had lots of dinners and home-based events. People were interested and had ideas, but frequently they were not the ones contributing money. We needed to raise money so started hosting events which cost money. "Selling product has worked for Alliance as well. It is interesting to see how Carol quickly translates money into a child's schooling or supplies. These are not dollars to her, they are missions accomplished. And of course, establishing alliances and partnerships to fund sponsorships has become another very rewarding rung in the ladder of growth for Alliance.
What was the spark of Alliance's inception? Creative Connections...she was part of a generating community which took her dream and vision and expanded it "beyond my wildest dreams..."
Says Carol, "I rode the wave, the tide, the momentum the community around me generated."

Women's Week in France
"Ecrivant le second acte de ta vie - prends les rênes" June 5-11, 2011 | |
- Are ready for an adventure?
- Have you ever lived in the luxury of a 'tres Bellemaison'?
- Would you like to live in France for a week with a chef, chauffeur, maid and Bill and Sydney Patten as our guides?
We have the opportunity to be welcomed into the home of Sydney and Bill Patten in the tiny mountain village of Ore in the Pyrenees. In contrast to tourist trodden regions like Provence or Tuscany, you will find a frontier landscape - a tranquil but uniquely varied terrain of hiddden valleys, pagan ruins, gentle walks, and sometimes rugged trails that include pilgrimage routes.
 | | La Belle Maison |
The theme for the week is: "Ecrivant le second acte de ta vie - prends les rênes." (Writing the second act of your life - taking the reins) Does that speak to YOU?
