| Rajesh Sigdel "Learns to Fish"
I still have a vivid picture in my mind. I used to walk 25 minutes to school with worn out, damaged shoes. When ANSWER selected me, I got a sponsor to which I will always be grateful, (Kathleen Kleaveland from Muskigon, Michigan), and a new pair of shoes. My name is Rajesh Sigdel and I was born and raised in the Eastern Terai region of Nepal in a peasant family. Life was hard. My father died when I was seven so my mother raised three boys alone. When my oldest brother was 16 he went to work to support our family. As a result he was not able to further his education and is able to speak only a little English. Many families are like mine and struggle every day to feed their children. We lived in a two room apartment with only a few hours of electricity a day which made studying at night a challenge children as mine did. We lived in a small home, consisting of a rustic kitchen and one bedroom, with only a few hours of electricity a day. (Sometimes studying at night was a challenge!) I did not fully understand how this opportunity for education would change my life forever. When I graduate and get a good job I will be able to help support my family and also plan to help other Answer students.
Today I am an ANSWER graduate attending Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan as a scholarship recipient of the Near East and South Asia Exchange Program sponsored by the United States Department of Education. My major is Urban Planning. I see myself as a young Nepalese youth who has a mission to lead Nepal towards development and responsibility.
Instead of a destiny of factory work or hard physical labor, my education will provide me with to a bright future in Nepal. Instead of working in the fields, I am visiting the USA and discussing with other NESA students the problems in the Middle East and news about the Pakistan and Afghanistan border. Nepal is a country whose infrastructure was almost destroyed by the ten year long civil war, but is changing rapidly. Through the opportunity of education, ANSWER is helping Nepal to break down the caste system and open job opportunity to people from the lower caste. We can see the impact of ANSWER from Kathmandu to Jumla, an area which is completely isolated from the rest of the world. Students in Jomsom still don't have pens to write with so they show their hunger for education by writing in the earth with a stick or marble. ANSWER tries to reach every part of Nepal and selects bright students who do well in class, have a thirst for reading, and a desire to excel. ANSWER and their sponsors sparks the light of education to those hopeless students whose parents are so poor they can barely feed their children. My sponsor, Kathleen, gave me an opportunity to go to school and get my education. While studying in the United States, I have been lucky to be invited for Thanksgiving and Christmas to spend the holiday with Kathleen and her daughter, Debra. It was a wonderful opportunity to know one another and I am so grateful.
As the proverb goes, ANSWER did not give me fish, but taught me how to fish. My sponsor, Kathleen, and ANSWER have made all the difference in my life.

Sponsor Answers Need!
In Nepal, few people own computers, so cybercafes are omnipresent. However, most students graduate from high school with 6 years of computer classes with little practice in keyboarding or internet training. In today's world, learning these skills are critical, so we call our college students in to email their sponsors and to practice typing. Going into the job market with these skills puts them a head above the rest!
Jim Reay at Lumbini, Nepal, the birthplace of Buddah

When Jim Reay, Phoenix sponsor, heard about this urgent need, he took 4 small laptop computers with him on his trip to Nepal. Because of the outstanding success and increased demand, he recently sent 4 MORE laptops with the ANSWER team! Thanks to Jim, the Student Resource Room at ANSWER headquarters is humming with activity!
Like other sponsors who visit Nepal and see ANSWER in action, Jim has become a staunch supporter. He recently returned from a visit of educational projects in Uganda and Kenya.
Jim writes to Earle, "I am learning lots in my travels--especially with the added privilege of spending a month in both Nepal and Uganda. I am very disappointed that the NGO I am visiting here in Uganda is not more accountable for the money that people donate in good faith. ... Earle, I continue to be impressed with ANSWER and am pledged to continue my support. Traveling with you and your staff last September provided me a continued, positive insight into how ANSWER is doing a tremendous job to educate Nepalese students."
Thanks, Jim, for your continued generosity!! |

Canadians Support ANSWER
 | Vanessa Higgott and Her Girls
| Vanessa Higgott and Learn 4 Life Nepal continue to support ANSWER college students. Vanessa is a young Canadian woman living in Ontario who first came to Nepal about 6 years ago and volunteered in Hopeful Home Orphanage (now called HH Children's Home). Vanessa conferred with ANSWER on how to best help HH, rather than duplicating efforts, and we proposed that she help with college costs and helping the older children transition to outside living. She raised funds to this end by holding an annual music event which consistently does well, so well that she had extended college help to ANSWER students going to college who had no sponsors. Presently she is funding 11 of our children at college as well as helping HH. Thank you, Vanessa! You are AMAZING!
Climbers Lucille DeBeaudrap of Canada, and Angel Armesto of Argentina each stood on the summit of Everest with Learn for Life on a flag or a patch, and certainly in their hearts... |

Chai TeaDELICIOUS!! Requested recipe From Melinda Merkle-Iyer (Phoenix) This recipe makes 4 cups, or about 3 medium-sized mugs full. 2 cups whole milk 2 cups filtered water 4 teaspoons sugar, or to taste 1/2 tsp freshly grated peeled ginger (be careful; too much will curdle the milk) 1/8 to 1/4 tsp fresh ground cardamom (this is an aromatic spice so be sure your bottle is less than 6 months old) 1/8 tsp freshly cracked black pepper, on coarse grind 3 to 4 teaspoons loose Assam or other black tea (use Brooke Bond Red Label, available at Indian markets, for most authentic flavor), or 4 Irish breakfast tea bags in a pinch Place milk, water, sugar and spices in a medium saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring to prevent scorching. Add tea leaves; wait 4 minutes or so, keeping over heat if desired (traditional Indian tea is simmered even while brewing). Strain and serve, adding additional sugar if desired.

Swayambhunath Stupa
According to Wikipedia, "Swayambhunat is an ancient religious complex atop a hill in the Kathmandu Valley, west of Kathmandu city. It is also known as the Monkey Temple as there are holy monkeys living in parts of the temple. There is a large pair of eyes on each of the four sides of the main stupa which represent Wisdom and Compassion. Above each pair of eyes is another eye, the third eye. It is said that when Buddha preaches, cosmic rays emanate from the third eye which act as messages to heavenly beings, so that those interested can come down to earth to listen to the Buddha."
