Essential Tips for using Aromatherapy!

1.  Always take precautions with essential oils - Muscle test to make sure aromatherapy is appropriate for each individual animal. Especially CATS as they are very sensitive to essential oils and can be toxic to them.

2.   Aromatherapy should be used sparingly. A little goes a long way - just a few drops added to a carrier oil or spring water is plenty.

3.  Do not allow pets to ingest essential oils - use as a spritz or a massage oil or simply to inhale the fragrance . Again, be careful with cats.

4.  Always store your essential oils in a dark, cool place and use colored glass or plastic bottles because essential oils are afeected by light.

5.  Think outside the box - use aromatherapy in household cleaners to help  our pets naturally: baking soda and essential oils for carpets, lemon and lavendar water to clean the floors, vinegar and  essential oils like lemongrass to clean the counters.

6.  Rosemary for the garden will keep the insects away - plant rosemary bushes in your garden or yard. You can also make an essential oil spray with rosemary and spring water to spritz on the plants.

7.  Ginger and peppermint oils can relieve motion sickness while traveling - just a whiff will do!

8.  Try one of The Lightfoot Way's  oil blends  - Mellow Fellow calms anxious pets with a soothing oil blend . Hocus Focus promotes a calm focus for performance animals or for training. Pest Busters works great to repel mosquitos, fleas and flies from horses, dogs and people!

Aromatherapy for People & Animals

Aromatherapy is commonly used by many people.  Essential oils are extracted from the flowers, leaves, bark, roots, stems, seeds, or fruit of a plant.  The oils are then either inhaled or diluted and rubbed into the skin.  Veterinary remedies date back to the 18th century.  In addition to holistic vets and naturopathic doctors, this method is utilized by holistic practitioners, massage therapists, and a growing number of animal caregivers.  Aromatherapy has the ability to work on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level.

But what many people do not realize, is that you really need to know the precautions before you use essential oils on animals.  In fact, they can be too strong or too much energy for people, too.  We have seen and heard of too many negative reactions when used by those who simply needed more knowledge for success.  Click here to find out the key to success in using aromatherapy on both people and animals along with some helpful blend ideas!

Paula and Ginger

Ginger

by Paula Vandervoort

Ginger, our boxer, is a five-year-old with a mind of her own.  Although a seasoned show dog with two Championship titles and lots of hotel stays under her belt, she decided a couple of years ago that "her people" needed protection.  From the Fed Ex guy, the UPS guy and the trash collectors, to small furry dogs, and worst of all, mothers with baby carriages.  Really Ginger?  Babies?  The Fed Ex guy doesn't even ring the doorbell and run anymore.  He just sneaks up, leaves the package, and runs away.  Monty Python style.

She's obedience trained, but apparently that wasn't sufficient.  She dragged me across concrete on my elbows going after someone just because they "looked at her person".  Vet visits, blood tests, titers, treatments - all to no avail.  So off she went to California, where she spent six months with a well-known trainer who deals with assertive/aggressive behaviors.  He pronounced her "cured".  The day she returned she went after a neighbor.  So much for that.  Click here to read the exciting and charming story of how essential oils tamed this boxer beast.
