Dear Friend of United Way!
I am excited to say we are finally getting all of our technology programs together and will be able to provide you a regular, electronic update about the activities and events offered by United Way of Erie County. As a donor and supporter of our organization, we want to make sure that you know what we are doing with funds provided to our organization as well as become aware of the opportunities to get more involved in the mission of our work.
The mission of United Way of Erie County is to increase the capacity for people to care for one another. How better to do that than to know and understand the issues that are being faced by many members of our community. It will take all of us to work together to make Erie County a better place to live, work and play.
I have been participating in many meetings which are trying to address the violence in our community, the increasing rate of poverty, as well as helping youth refrain from engaging in risky behaviors. The common theme among all these new partnerships of professionals and community members is that no one agency or person alone can conquer these problems - it will take all of us, as a community to work together. I am also surprised at the lack of knowledge of the resources available in our community. While we do not have as many as larger communities, we do have many. I see it as the role of United Way to make sure that professional and residents know of the services available and have access to the resources. Not just those funded by United Way, but those within our community. | |
We will use the electronic newsletter as a vehicle to keep you informed of the issues being faced within the community and how United Way is addressing those needs, whether it is partnering with the Volunteer Center to collect school supplies to ensure all children have what they need to be successful; partnering with Second Harvest and Care and Share to provide fresh produce to individuals unable to afford the such; or partnering with EHOVE and other businesses to provide financial information to enable them to be independent.
We will also use the newsletter to talk about the volunteer opportunities available and how you and/or your family and friends can give back to the community. |
August and September Farmer's Market
| |
United Way of Erie County recently partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank and Care and Share for two Farmer's Markets. With many efforts, over 225 struggling families were provided with fresh produce- carrots, squash, cucumbers, cabbage, lettuce and so much more. Many of the families served were so greatful to receive the assistance. These Farmer's Markets turned out to be so successful that United Way of Erie County will be assisting with one more market in October. Please visit our facebook page for more photos of these events. |
| Stuff the School Bus- School Supply Drive | |
United Way of Erie County and the Volunteer Center of Erie County recently held a School Supply Drive for local children in surrounding schools. Rulers, crayons, loose-leaf paper, glue sticks, scissors, markers, and pencils were all donated to help those children in need to start out the school year successfully. The total campaign brought in about $4,500 worth of school supplies, and helped an estimate of over 700 children. Many of the clients were very greatful to receive the supplies, and hundreds of children entered the school year equipped to learn! |
