Going Solo: a new CD Stephanie's newest CD is out and available for purchase. Going Solo: Unaccompanied Works for Violin and Viola is a CD that in many ways has been a lifetime in the works.
In the CD liner notes Stephanie explains: "I started my career as a professional violinist in 1985 when, as a graduate student at the Eastman School of Music, I won a position in The Cleveland Orchestra. It was a dream job: the orchestra recorded extensively, performed with legendary guest soloists and conductors, and toured internationally. I was privileged to be making music with some of the most talented instrumentalists in the business. But one summer, a small voice inside of me proclaimed, "Lord, I can't be in this orchestra when I start a family!" My prayers were answered when in 1994 I won the concertmaster position with the San Antonio Symphony. I went from being one of 100-plus colleagues to one of 76 and I couldn't have felt more blessed. And I started my family in 1997.
"I found myself playing in even smaller ensembles when I founded, with the help of my husband, a chamber music festival in San Antonio-a dream of mine fulfilled. Cactus Pear Music Festival (www.cpmf.us) has allowed me to totally saturate myself in my life-long passion, chamber music. My path eventually led in 2007 to the University of Nevada, Reno, and the intimate group of a piano trio. Making music with the Argenta Trio has fed my soul and my colleagues inspire me daily. "And although making music as "one of three" is extremely intimate and deeply satisfying, something in me wanted to express myself completely on my own. In a way, this CD marks a coming about full circle for me: I began studying the violin as a child learning solo pieces and practicing countless hours alone; I went into the world to make music with many others and now I'm back at the beginning of my path, Going Solo. I hope that you find the intimacy of the unaccompanied violin and viola to be as satisfying to your spirit as it has been for mine." With works by Ysaye, Telemann, Kreisler, Schulfhoff and Piazzolla among others including a world premier by James Winn, a colleague of Stephanie's at the University of Nevada, Reno as well as a guest artist at CPMF, this CD is a wonderful work of art. ORDER the CD via our PayPal account, with all major credit cards. This button will take you to our CPMF ticket and CD page where you will find Going Solo at the top right column.

Young Artist Program Winners
The Eighth Annual Young Artist Program [YAP] auditions were held April 2 with Education Director Craig Sorgi and Artistic Director Stephanie Sant'Ambrogio judging the incredibly talented musicians who submitted applications. In correspondence with all applicants after the auditions, Craig wrote, "We were very impressed with all of you and feel that we were fortunate to hear such fine playing. That always makes the decision making process more difficult but that is a kind of difficult that we appreciate." The ensemble of five young musicians were announced on Sunday. They are:
Rachel Roberts, violin [MacArthur High School] Nathan Dowling, viola [Home School] McKinley Glasser, cello [Boerne Champion High School] Mattie Kotzur, flute [John Marshall High School] Ellen Pavliska, piano [Home School] Ryan Zarmbinski was named as runner-up violinist.
We wish to congratulate the winners of this year's competition for these coveted spots and the chance to be taught by, and learn from, the world-class professionals who make up the ensemble of festival artists this year.
The quintets first task at hand is to come up with a name for themselves. The last quintet CPMF "hosted" two seasons ago called themselves a very creative and humorous "The Quintus Cactet;" last season's octet named themselves "The Bloomin' Ocotillos" -- ocotillo being a type of cactus and one that sounds as if it might have eight of something or other. In this case it was eight very talented young musicians. We wait with baited breath to find out what our new "five-some" decides for their musical moniker.
For those who may not know, YAP is a two-week, intensive FULL SCHOLARSHIP educational program for young artists that runs the two weeks of the festival. Between three to eight young instrumentalists are chosen in the spring through a rigorous audition. The young artists then form an ensemble to study and perform chamber music. The curriculum includes private instruction and chamber music coachings with Festival artists, lecture classes on aspects of music performance/careers and EIGHT community engagement performance opportunities including the final two San Antonio festival concerts. This is the type of opportunity that has evoked comments such as "life changing" and "the best thing I've ever done." We look forward to hearing this summer this new ensemble of some of the most talented young musicians that south Texas has to offer. |

Festival Updates
You will notice some new faces this summer in our festival line up of artists. In a first-time collaboration with the San Antonio International Piano Competition, CPMF welcomes pianist Ryo Yanagitani who has distinguished himself as one of Canada's most promising young concert artists. Ryo won the gold medal at the 10th Annual SAIPC and received special recognition for a performance of the complete Chopin Ballades. We also welcome violinist Carmit Zori who, at the recommendation of Isaac Stern and Alexander Schneider, came to the United States from her native Israel at the age of fifteen to study with Ivan Galamian, Jaime Laredo and Arnold Steinhardt at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Carmit has appeared as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic, the Rochester Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and performs internationally. Cellist Aron Zelkowicz was born in Canada but grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is the Founder and Director of the Pittsburgh Jewish Music Festival, which presents rare and diverse works from Jewish musical traditions to Pittsburgh audiences every spring. Aron now lives in New York City and performs at many of the renowned festivals of Canada and the U.S.
We look forward to welcoming the new artists to CPMF as well as the familiar faces such as pianist Jeffrey Sykes, the Edelens--harpsichordist Christina and cellist Fred, as well as cellists Tony Ross and Beth Rapier. It's going to be another summer of incredible music and artistry.
