What to Change the Life of a Child?
Become a Mentor!
Power Read at Monroe Elementary

Power Read at Monroe Elementary is a program made possible through a partnership with United Way of Central Iowa. The program is aimed at kindergarten and first grade students at Monroe Elementary.

Our goal of the program is to utilize one on one time with mentors to increase students' literacy success. Mentors will be paired with the same student at a time that works best with their schedule for one hour at the same day and time each week. You may choose to mentor on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays 9am-3pm and Wednesdays 9am-1pm. The Power Read program will begin the last week in September and run through May.

Books and activities will be provided to mentors and students to allow for structure in the program.  Our goal is to have 40 students matched up with a mentor by next week for the 2012-2013 school year. Currently, we are 15 mentors away from reaching our goal, so we need your help!

Power Lunch Programs start next week!
Next week we will kick off our Power Lunch program for the 2012-2013 school year. Everybody Wins! Iowa is excited to have programs in 15 schools this year and 2 community organizations (Children and Family Urban Ministries and Boys and Girls Club of Central Iowa). This year we have added 2 new program sites in Des Moines (King Elementary and the Downtown School) as well as the 4 elementary schools in Indianola (Emerson Elementary, Irving Elementary, Whittier Elementary, and Wilder Elementary).

We are still looking for mentors in a majority of these schools. Our greatest need is at Capitol View on Thursdays, Carver Elementary on Tuesday, Edmunds on Thursdays, South Union on Wednesdays, St. Theresa's on Tuesdays, Whittier Elementary on Thursdays, and Wilder Elementary on Wednesdays.

Message from the Executive Director:

We are thrilled to have over 375 elementary school students in Des Moines and Indianola matched with volunteer reading mentors! It is a joy to watch the delight on a child's face when they meet their mentor for the first time and begin a magical bond that forms while turning pages together in a book.
