Greetings!
Wow that was the rainiest May that I can remember. For those of you who are enrolled in our GEN+ program, we have been watching your generator systems start-up for power disturbances more frequently than ever. Fortunately, most were for very short periods.
With that thought in mind, take a look at the above satellite photo of the United States... Look Familiar? Does something look a little unusual? Well, this is an actual image during the Northeast Blackout from August 2003. Not that we can predict another incident like this, but given the tornado activity in the Plain States this kind of disaster feels closer than ever.
If you have any concerns about the reliability of your system, please give us a call and we can dispatch a tech immediately.
Sincerely,
Jeff Berry

Take a closer look. If you dare...
OK - so you are doing your weekly testing. Performing your visual inspections, filling out your log sheets and taking all of the proper readings from the generator control panel. Did it ever occur to you to take a closer look at your switchgear or generator control panels? We don't expect you to understand the electrical components, but there's a good chance that you may recognize some obvious problems. See below for some real scenarios...

These cute 'lil guys are always looking for warm, dry spaces to make a home, and unfortunately generators and switchgear meet that specification. Mice also have a knack for chewing the worst possible wires for nesting material and can actually destroy the generator end of a power system in no time. The top photos show a "family" living in an 800amp ATS cabinet. Some family members didn't fair very well when they crossed over the normal utility phases. The nesting material in the bottom left switch is actually the 40 page operator's manual. The bottom right is the control panel of an Onan generator after the nest was removed, but the damage was already done from the chewed wires and corrosion from urine.
Rodent nesting is the leading cause of sudden equipment failure - especially in outdoor/enclosed power systems.

Don't confuse a "Bad Air Day" for a bad Hair day!!!
It's official... Memorial Day 2011 was the first Hazardous Air Day of 2011 (as well as 5/31/11). Hopefully everyone was home BBQ'n and not performing their weekly generator test. If you exercised your generator on the 30th or 31st, you have violated the NJDEP testing standard as designated by your General Permit and may be subject to fines.
Check www.AirNow.gov for a daily report before you perform a routine generator test (if your generator is over 37kw). However, you must keep a log book to document every run, test and power failure of your generator system - regardless of kW. Lately, we have seen the individual County Health Departments enforcing this mandate for the State. Fines will be issued for: NO PERMIT, NO LOG-BOOK and/or OPERATING ON A BAD AIR DAY!!!
R&J has developed a solution to this time-consuming dilemma of generator testing. Click the video link to the left to learn more...

Spring Cleaning Special
A clean generator is a working generator. Let R&J clean your generator inside and out. We will start by performing a full pressure wash of your power system. This will let us identify any worn parts or leaks. At this point, we would recommend a resistive load bank test to clean the exhaust of any unburned fuel. This test will also prove that the machine can carry the rated load.
**Exclusions apply. Based on exterior unit with available water supply. Call for details |
