Preparing for the Upcoming Conferences by Having a One-Year Plan in Mind
In trying to help our children be successful, we often need help and advice from others. That's why it's important to work together with your child's school. With conferences just around the corner, here are ten time-tested ideas from the Cline/Faye Institute that support both children and parents working together with the teacher. Our approach as parents will vary with the age of our student but, I think if we would try these ideas for one year, we will surely be amazed. Remember, that the long-term approach is always more difficult but the results are worth it.
1. Remember that parents can't teach for teachers and teachers can't teach for parents. Remember that teachers can't learn for kids and kids can't learn for teachers.
2. Show the same amount of love for your children regardless of their success in school. Show sadness rather than anger when they have trouble in school.
3. Expect your children to do their share of the chores at home.
4. Spend some time each day talking with excitement about your work and your day. Your children will begin to imitate you and will soon begin to talk about school and their day.
5. Take turns reading to each other every day.
6. Have your children teach you something they have learned at school. Do this at least once per week. Include all the subjects and electives.
7. Encourage your children to do things that "recharge their batteries." Encourage them to try many different activities as a way of discovering their talents. Remind them they will build their careers around their talents, not around their weaknesses.
8. Provide a time and place for reading and homework. Expect your children to study and expect them to read outside of school. Reading a wide range of books and support materials will increase your child's vocabulary, comprehension and increase their general knowledge. Talk about what your child reads, and they will end up doing all the talking.
9. Have your children bring home school papers. Look at the right answers instead of the wrong answers. Have your children explain the right answer to you and how they got it. Children love to share what they know.
10.Expect this program to take about one year before you see good results. Remember that children who struggle at school or have a hard time in school will need to get away from it for a while each day. More homework and problems at home won't help your child learn any faster.
Holding and applying some of these ideas will allow all of us as parents, teachers and administrators to better influence each other and especially our children at school. As a school community, we know that working together with an approach that includes empathy and respect rather than criticism and judgment will yield greater results for all involved. Bar none, Twin Peaks parents are the very best I've ever been associated with in supporting their school and seeing the end product.

Student Fees are now PAST DUE!
Attention Parents:
Be aware that any unpaid student fees are now PAST DUE!
TPCA did allow a grace period of 30 days on student fees that were due on August 1, therefore, any student fees unpaid on August 31 are now considered late.
Please send in your payment or contact the Business Office to set up a payment plan in order to avoid disablement of Parent Portal access and having your student's report card being withheld.
If your family qualified in the 2011-12 school year for the Federal Free or Reduced lunch program, your qualification ended on September 30, 2012, and you must reapply by October 1 for the 2012-2013 school year for continued benefits and Free/Reduced discounts on student fees. Applications are available at the school office.
If you would like to receive discounted student fees for the 12-13 school year on your Free Lunch, Reduced Lunch or Employee status, you must:
a. Make full payment by August 31, 2012 or have a payment plan in place with the Business Office. Otherwise you will lose your Free or Reduced Lunch discount and be responsible for 100% of the student fee.
b. Provide a copy of your 12-13 Free/Reduced Lunch qualification letter to the school office.
Thank you for being accountable for your student's fees.

OCTOBER COUNTS:
October count is a very important time of the year for all schools in Colorado. The October count determines the funding that our school receives from the state. Accurate October counts ensure TPCA receives the funding that enables us to hire and retain the best staff and offer excellent academic programming in a safe and encouraging environment. It is important that students are in attendance throughout this time so that an accurate count of the number of students TPCA has is recorded. The October count window starts on Monday, September 24 and runs to Monday, October 8. Should you have questions, please contact Marilyn Putrah at putrah_marilyn@svvsd.org

Bolder Boulder | |
Thanks to the parents who came to practice with our running club, as well, especially Jen Schallberg and David Shattuck.
TPCA is looking forward to being in contention for repeating this award in the Spring of 2013 Bolder Boulder! Congratulations to TPCA from the Bolder Boulder organizers as TPCA recently received notice that our school had the highest participation (within our division) of students running the Bolder Boulder in the 2012 race! Race representative, Alice Swanson, will come and present a poster and announce this positive accolade to our entire school at the first quarter awards assembly. Special recognition for outstanding individual times goes to Adam Pena for being the fastest boy finisher from our school, and Kela Fetters for being the fastest girl finisher from TPCA in the 2012 race. Success like this could not take place unless staff members from TPCA stepped in to organize and train our racers, as well as provide supervision and inspiration on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Major kudos and thanks to our most excellent and fit staff members: CarolAnn Austin, Lisa Bohannon, Leandra Cassanueva, Diana Dolinar, Lisa Fetters, Lindsey Ginesi, Sarah LaMutt, and Andrea Zakelj. |

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL | |
The 6th, 7th, and 8th grade had an excellent volleyball season with 45 girls participating. The 7th and 8th grade played 18 games against other schools in the district and private schools. They ended the season strong by winning against Coal Ridge and Mead at the district tournament. Great job! |
