"School Finance, Charter School Finance, Financing
my Child's Education at Twin Peaks"
Dear Parents: It's always a difficult subject to approach, both in your home as well as mine, but the subject
of "money" and how each of us chooses to spend our "money" is something that we all monitor and measure
with regards to each of our families short or long term financial goals. Twin Peaks Charter Academy is no
different. While our financial model and reserves are planned, monitored and met, TPCA faces the very real
and specific financial challenges of repaying bond debt that was secured to fund our present site and facilities.
Our facilities are outstanding, our student growth has exceeded expectations, our staff works tirelessly and
in the end, our academic results have increased during this period of expansion at Twin Peaks. Yet, like our
chartering St. Vrain Valley School District and other public schools in the state of Colorado we are currently
facing "another year" of declining per pupil operating revenue. The vision and planning from the Board of
Director's has been calculated and courageous during this expansion and the demand to enroll at TPCA
continues as more parents have sought TPCA for their student. While this is happening, our financial
budget/model projects that we use a considerable portion of our District PPR (per pupil revenue) funding
to pay down our bond debt for our facilities all the while seeking to improve upon our current facility
needs, classroom/physical resources, our future athletic fields and compensate our staff accordingly.
It is at this point, where choices are made, consideration given, budget's need to balance, while following the
TPCA mission statement with the organization being solvent, maintaining an independent, yet self-governing
charter approach while navigating the current tides of Colorado school finance. It is also, important to realize
the choice we have made as parents to attend and participate at Twin Peaks because we value the education
our child is receiving both now and for their future. Here lies the crossroads, somewhere between the head and
the heart that the battle is fought on much a "free education" should cost and the value we place on the
education our child is receiving. We intellectualize and know that "nothing is free", yet we all struggle to some
extent to understand; What is the actual cost and what dollar value that am I willing to pay or dare I say, find
tolerable in financing my child's (ren) quality education at TPCA?
Twin Peaks BOD through the recommendation of the Finance Committee with input from Administration has
had to raise all registration fees for all students for the 2012-13 school year. This also includes raising our Full
Day Kindergarten tuition as Kindergarten students are only funded partially from the State of Colorado.
As we prepare and communicate the re-enrollment process for next year, we are asking you to review the
time-lines we have established and the minimum registration fees. This information can also we found
Thank you in advance for understanding these needed fee increases as TPCA has had significantly low
fees these past years. I trust that each of us realize there is a cost in having a quality education in choosing
Twin Peaks but that the cost we pay now, lasts farther into the future than we could have truly imagined if we
had not financed our child's education at Twin Peaks.

After School Middle School Advisory
starting the week of January 16
Welcome back and Happy New Year! With a full semester under their belts we are hopeful students
have begun honing in on how to organize and prioritize their academic workload to be successful in
their middle school years. We do recognize though that there are times when students struggle with
the demands of school, home lives, and after school activities. At times some students fall behind
in their responsibility to complete assignments which impacts their successful completion of
courses and moving on to the next grade/course.
Twin Peaks' mission is to provide students with the foundations of virtue and character, building
cultural literacy through a rigorous, content-rich curriculum in an encouraging environment. As part
of this mission we know students can only be successful if they participate in the educational
process by being present, engaging in class discussions, and completing the work assigned that
helps students gain the knowledge and experience to master their course standards. By doing
these things students also gain invaluable character traits like responsibility and perseverance
that will serve them well throughout their life. Starting the week of January 16 middle school teachers will be directing an after
school advisory.
This advisory serves two purposes:
1) to identify and support students who consistently fall behind
in their studies due to failure to complete and turn in work, and
2) to offer content support for those students who wish to get ahead or remain successful in their
studies. The first purpose carries a mandatory attendance requirement, and the second is on a
voluntary basis. 1) Students who miss two assignments in any one course will be required to attend after school
advisory. Via phone or email teachers will inform parents by the end of the day on the Friday
preceding the mandatory advisory period. If a student has missing assignments in multiple courses,
they may be required to attend multiple days of advisory. 2) Students who wish to voluntarily come to advisory to get ahead on course work or get help are
encouraged to do so. They may drop in on the day the specific content area holds their advisory. Advisory courses meet from 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. on the days listed below.
Students will be dismissed at 4:00 p.m. Parents need to promptly pick students up at dismissal
in either front office. Monday: Science Tuesday: Math Wednesday: Spanish and Social Studies Thursday: English Part of having a rigorous, content-rich curriculum includes students fully engaging in their education.
With programs like advisory and intervention, along with parental support students can be successful
and confident as they move toward high school and beyond.
Sincerely, Middle School BJ Buchmann
