Service Learning Providers at

Twin Peaks Charter Academy High School
Service learning hours are a requirement at TPHS and is organized at the class and or grade level. These hours required are meant to address real community needs and  for students to support these needs by having students giving their time in order to meet the mission of these non-profit/service learning organizations. TPHS will provide a designated day for students at the various grade levels to earn service hours to satisfy part of the requirement. As was the case this past October 13, where high school students cleaned the St.Vrain Valley Greenbelt areas. Students are to have a minimum of 100 service hours in order for them to graduate from high school at Twin Peaks. Pro-rated hours will apply for those students who are transfer students to TPHS.

Also, from  time to time service learning providers will be invited into TPCA during Access Period, in order to present opportunities to students and parents to accumulate needed service learning hours. Organizations invited to present service learning opportunities to Twin Peaks high school students must have a similar or uniform mission in their own purpose and/or function as related to the Twin Peaks Charter Academy mission statement.
At times, some of these service learning organizations may be a "faith based" organization and can be viewed as a pathway to accumulate needed service learning hours for high school students. As "faith or religions" are a shaping force in the story of ancient civilizations, our countries history as well as other countries current history, the goal and purpose during a service learning presentation for high school students during Access Period, is not to explore matters of theology but only present an opportunity for acquiring hours needed.  The goal is to familiarize, not proselytize, to be descriptive, not prescriptive in sharing this service learning opportunity with high school students. People of different faiths believe different things to be true and the best people to guide high school students in this conversation should be you, the parents or someone within your home.  If you as parent know of any service learning organizations that may need high school students to volunteer their time in support of their mission or who could present their needs to students during  a scheduled Access Period, please contact Marge Larsen, High School Secretary at Twin Peaks Charter Academy. 303-772-7286 Ext: 56906.

The curriculum committee received a request by a parent to conduct a review of The Book Thief which was approved by the Board of Directors last year to be included in the 8th grade English course. The curriculum committee, after hearing and discussing the parent's concerns, the review process completed last year, and the premise of the book, voted 10 to 1 not to conduct another review of the book this year. There is a 10 day waiting period for members of the TPCA community to submit opposition to the curriculum committee's decision. Opposition to the curriculum committee's decision can be submitted to Danielle Feeney, Assistant Principal until November 20.

READING CHALLENGE
TPCA will be having a reading challenge again this year! Because students easily read 600,000 minutes last year, this year the challenge has been increased

to the 1,000,000 Minutes Reading Challenge

Students grades K-6 will participate in the reading challenge. The reading challenge will officially run December 1 to February 24.
Our cost is estimated at $350 - $500 for student incentives, materials, and prizes per classroom. We are seeking to partner with local businesses in support of the 1,000,000 Minutes Reading Challenge.

Sponsor recognitions would consist of the following:

- Thank You article in the Howl for 3 weeks (our parent weekly newsletter)

- Banner in the school with the business name as a sponsor

- Personal letter

- Plaque to hang in the business

- Board recognition

- Public recognition on our TPCA marquis over a weekend

- Photo to send to local media

- Invitation to come in and read to one of the winning classes.

If you are a business owner, or work for a business that has funds available for donations, please consider sponsoring the 1,000,000 Minutes Reading Challenge.
