Odyssey of the Mind: An Enriching Opportunity!
TPCA invites you to sign up now for
the 2011-2012 Odyssey of the Mind,
a creative, problem-solving program designed to teach students from Kindergarten to High School to think "outside the box." Students are encouraged to use materials in unique ways, working as a team to generate a single, timed solution to a select problem. Participants have fun while developing skills like creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, adaptability, accountability, self-direction, communication, and leadership. Learn more at www.odysseyofthemind.com. Please consider coaching, too! A sign-up form was emailed earlier this week from TPCA. Forms are due by Wednesday, 9/28 and a Parents Meeting will be held that evening at 6:30 pm in the TPCA commons (where additional copies of the form will be available). Please  contact our school's co-coordinators Kathleen Meuse (big_b_and_little_k@yahoo.com) or Jenna Huisken (jenna@jhuisken.com) with questions.

Character Trait of the Week: TRUSTWORTHINESS
Are you doing what you say you will do? Are you keeping promises?
Discussion Starters and Thoughts
     Elementary: How is remembering my class rules helping me to become trustworthy?
     Middle School: You forgot a deadline in class and left an assignment undone. What is the trustworthy thing to do about it?
     High School: Describe how loyalty is a part of trustworthiness and how that will help you in the adult world.

High School Access: We are continuing our test prep for the national exams and discussions around Student Leadership.
Parents, look for the practice exams to be coming home in the next few weeks. Exam day is Oct. 12.

High School Students: Service Learning Hours tracking sheets are available in the HS Counseling Office or online. Remember, you need 25 a year!

THE  6th ANNUAL TPCA PTO NO BAKE SALE HAS BEGUN !!!

This is our

BIG YEARLY

 Fundraising Drive! Flyers came
home last week, with the details. It's a very simple drive,
all we're asking for is cash donations! There is no selling,
no inventory to deliver and definitely NO BAKING!

We hope to raise $25,000 this year, and average around
$40/student. Any amount that your family is able to donate (tax
deductible) will help us  tremendously!
You can ask your friends and family to make a monetary
contribution, and many employers have a Matching Gifts
Program - every dollar counts!
We will graciously accept donations throughout the year.
We will end the No Bake Sale Drive on November 10th, so
that we can deliver the participation prizes, as well as the
prize drawings (very cool prizes this year!).

The funds we raise directly support the STUDENTS, STAFF,
TEACHERS and THE CAMPUS. The PTO financially assists
and supports many functions and activities:
* Teacher / Classroom Supplies
* Field Trip Assistance
* Volunteer Appreciation
* 6th Grade Outdoor Ed
* 8th Grade Graduation
* Family/Student Social Events
* Conference Meals
* As feasible, and as requested, we support
all the various Groups, Clubs and Teams.
...and SO MANY other things during the year.
The PTO is always open to input and suggestions from parents, and
we strongly encourage you to come to our meetings! For additional information on the
No Bake Sale, or how to help out the PTO, please contact any of
contact any of the PTO Members!

The next PTO Meeting will be on October 5th, 1:30pm - 2:45pm.

Elementary Spanish After-School Program

Twin Peaks Families, a non-profit organization called, "Elementary Spanish Program" from the Boulder area is considering offering classes at Twin Peaks after school for students in Grades K-2 & Grades 3-5. Their particular program builds on two years of auditory curriculum so that young children may have the opportunity to develop strong listening and speaking skills before beginning literacy instruction in Spanish. The cost of the after school program is $310 for 40 classes (Tuesday & Thursday sessions run will run for 10 weeks for approximately 45 minutes per session 3:15 - 4:00)Class sizes will be limited to 15 students and sections of classes can be added if needed.

  • Auditory I is for all students in grades K-2 who have never taken Spanish classes or for students who begin Auditory 1 in Kindergarten and will take Auditory 1 again to reinforce and further develop the skills they learned in Kindergarten.
  • Auditory I O (Older) is for students in grades 3-5 who have never taken Spanish classes. Third and fourth grade students in this program will go on to Reading and Writing after completing a year of Auditory 1 O classes.
  • Auditory II is for second grade students who have completed the Auditory I program.

The classes consist of songs, games, and other lively activities as well as a workbook from the ¡Viva el Español! series (McGraw-Hill). In addition, this year we are adding an approach called Teaching Proficiency through Storytelling (TPR/S) to our existing program. Students will learn, act out, and create mini-cuentos, or short stories, that help them to put together the vocabulary in fun, interesting, and often silly ways.

If you have an interest in seeking this type of after-school program, please stop in and sign or call Twin Peaks front office and asked to be placed on the Elementary Spanish Program list. Further information can be found at the number below;. Thanks...BJ Buchmann, Principal

Unique Volunteer Opportunity at Twin Peaks Charter Academy

In this declining financial market TPCA is in need of a team of highly qualified volunteers to address our need for research and submission of grant opportunities.

This team of volunteers will work closely with the Board of Directors and Finance Committee to research, develop and submit applications for Qualified Grants.

The primary responsibilities include preparation of proposals and grant applications.  Work is performed under broad direction of the Finance Committee and candidates must be able to work independently.

The following Characteristics will make you a qualified candidate for this team:

Strong analytical, problem solving, and technical skills.  Strong interpersonal skills with excellent oral and written communication skills, and a commitment to teamwork.

This team will be set up in a hieratical fashion based on experience and leadership ability.  This volunteer opportunity can be performed from home with minimal face to face meetings if technology is used to communicate clearly and efficiently.

Please consider helping the school by applying and securing additional funds through this worthy venture.  If you are interested please submit a summary of qualifications or resume to Don Young or Kathy DeMatteo at the front office.  Questions can be directed to us as well.
