PRIME AMERICA FURTHER PROMOTES SAFETY &

EFFICIENCY WITH XATA TURNPIKE

Even if you're not in the trucking business, you know that the impact of crashes involving commercial motor vehicles cannot be underestimated. In fact, driver and fleet safety metrics are now critical factors in the shipper-carrier decision-making process. With this said, what shipper can afford to have less-than-stellar drivers and operators hauling their branded trailers around in an unsafe or reckless manner? Determined to maintain an excellent safety rating, Prime America Logistics, Inc. has turned to XATA Turnpike to keep up with compliance and exceed the safety standards set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

XATA Turnpike is a fleet management solution that takes the guesswork out of optimizing fleet and turns it into a science. The system is simple: a 9-pin device is hooked up to the vehicle's engine diagnostic system and relays information via GPS and cellular signals back to fleet headquarters. This system makes it easy to capture and analyze data such as time and distance, speed, tire pressure, RPMs, stops, idle time, engine load, fuel consumption, hours of service, hard brake incidents, load numbers, manifests, etc.

XATA Turnpike also offers an electric log system that reduces the time and effort needed to capture and report required information, enabling drivers to operate in a more efficient and safe environment.  With Xata Turnpike, Prime drivers will stay in compliance and safely maximize their time on the road, while fleet managers get up-to-the-minute operational information.

Today, any effort to reduce the horrendous human cost of fatalities and injuries or the hard costs of property, vehicle and cargo damage should be welcomed with open arms. XATA Turnpike will help Prime America reach the next level in performance and will position the company as a safe choice for shippers.

 MOVE OVER AMERICA

Move Over America

Move Over America Public Service Announcement

Have you heard of the "Move Over Law?" Many Americans have not. The rule specifies that if a person driving a vehicle approaches a stationary vehicle displaying warning lights, the passing vehicle is required to increase the distance between the stopped vehicle or at least slow down if they cannot move to a non-adjacent lane. Violators face up to $250 fines depending on the jurisdiction.

More than 150 U.S. law enforcement officers have been killed since 1999 after being struck by vehicles along America's highways, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. To lower that deadly toll, a new coalition of traffic safety and law enforcement groups is launching a nationwide public awareness campaign to protect emergency personnel along our nation's roadsides.

According to a national poll by Mason Dixon Polling & Research, sponsored by the National Safety Commission:

  • 71 percent of Americans have not heard of "Move Over" laws;
  • 86 percent support enacting "Move Over" laws in all 50 states; and
  • 90 percent believe traffic stops and roadside emergencies are dangerous for law enforcement and first responders.

Forty three states have passed "Move Over" laws, which require motorists to "Move Over" and change lanes to give safe clearance to law enforcement officers on roadsides. Arizona recently approved the new law, but expanded the vehicles covered to include any vehicle parked on the side of the road, including large trucks.

WEIRD & WILD WEATHER PERSISTS INTO HURRICANE SEASON

Monster tornadoes, historic floods, massive wildfires and widespread drought: Springtime has delivered a wallop of weather-related destruction and misery across much of the nation this year. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be over yet as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is forecasting a busier-than-normal hurricane season.

The average hurricane season brings 11 named storms, six hurricanes and two hurricanes of at least Category 3 strength. The NOAA forecast is for 12 to 18 named storms, six to 10 hurricanes and three to six major hurricanes.

We can blame warmer-than-average Gulf and Atlantic surface temperatures - an average of 2 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than average in the Atlantic - and La Nina, which is winding down but will continue to contribute to conditions conducive to hurricane development. We've also been in a cycle of increased hurricane activity since 1995, and there's no sign that the frequency is letting up.

This year, the early season threat area will be the western Gulf of Mexico and the southern portion of the Caribbean. Within this zone, the higher concern for landfalls will be along the Texas and Louisiana coastlines.

As for the mid-to-late season zones, the eastern Gulf and Caribbean will be the focus. The higher concern areas will be the Florida Peninsula to the Carolinas.

Another mid-to-late season concern for landfalls will be northern New England and the Canadian Maritimes.
