Which Breed Will You Root For?

If you have never seen Christopher Guest's improvisational comedy film "Best in Show," now would be a great time to reset your Netflix queue, or snag a copy on Ebay.  You'll enjoy the real thing so much more.

February offers San Diegans the opportunity to watch two fascinating dog shows:  the televised Westminster Kennel Club's sporting event on February 13 and 14 from New
York City, and the live excitement of the area's largest dog show with the Silver Bay Kennel Club Dog Show February 26 and 27 at the local Del Mar Fairgrounds.

Hickory, Scottish Deerhound, was 2011 winner
Hickory, a Scottish Deerhound, won the 2011 Best in Show title
at last year's AKC Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

The American Kennel Club (AKC) sanctions more than 15,000 dog shows a year to further its purpose to promote the study, breeding, exhibiting and advancement of purebred dogs.

In addition to conformation events, which judge the
overall appearance and structure of breeding stock, the AKC sponsors events such as obedience trials, Canine Good Citizen tests, field trials, agility trials, lure coursing, rally, hunting tests, herding trials, tracking tests,
coonhound and earthdog events.  For most of us it's a chance to see beautiful dogs and wonder why the mutt at our feet doesn't look or act the same way.

All-breed dog shows break the dogs into AKC-approved groups
for judging purposes.  Westminster, for example, will judge

these groups on Monday:
* Hounds
* Toy
* Non-Sporting
* Herding

and on Tuesday:
* Sporting
* Working
* Terrier

and the winners of each group will compete live on Tuesday
night for the title of

* Best in Show

You can find more information on the Westminster Kennel Club's
webiste, including broadcast schedules:

http://www.westminsterkennelclub.org/2012/show/info.html

This year the AKC will introduce six new breeds eligible to
compete for the Best of Show grand prize at Westminster,
bringing the total to 185 breeds.  Before the AKC approves a
new breed, there must be a significant number of dogs
in the U.S., a breed club to oversee enthusiasts, and geographic diversity.

The six new breeds are (clockwise from upper left):

* Xoloitzcuintli ("show-low"), Mexican hairless
* Norwegian Lundehund, six-toed puffin bird hunter
* Finnish Lapphund, reindeer herding dog
* American English coonhound
* Cesky terrier
* Entlebucher Mountain Dog, Swiss herding dog

Editor's note:  These and other so-called "designer breeds,"
some known as mutts, are available for adoption at the San
Diego County Animal Shelter or Humane Society.  And you can name your own loveable mutt's breed after giving yours a DNA test from
