Calling All Volunteers!
California Coastal Cleanup Day is coming to a beach or creek near you.
Coastal Cleanup Day is the largest single-day volunteer event to improve the marine environment, with participation by all 50 states and more than 150 different countries, organized by the Ocean Conservancy.
In San Diego, Coastal Cleanup Day will be held on Saturday, September 17th, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at more than 85 sites throughout the county.
Inland sites are coordinated by
I Love A Clean San Diego
and coastal sites are coordinated by
San Diego Coastkeeper
Those participating may sign up and obtain a waiver from
the Cleanupday website: www.cleanupday.org
Dog Beach Dog Wash will be sponsoring the Ocean Beach-Dog Beach site and we'll provide trash bags and disposable gloves, along with toys and treats for you and your friendly dogs. In order to reduce the amount of waste at the event, you are encouraged to bring your own reusable water bottle.
More than 80% of all marine debris comes from inland areas. San Diego's original Dog Beach in Ocean Beach is the recipient of all the trash washed down the 52-mile San Diego River starting near Julian. At Dog Beach we'll be picking up the litter -- especially plastics, cigarette butts, and dog feces -- that threatens the health and well-being of human & marine life.
Reducing intangible water pollution -- from bird feces, pesticides, fertilizers, and other toxic bacteria and chemicals from storm water outlets/sewer spills/soil erosion -- takes a longer and more coordinated attack, and we continue to support governmental and volunteer efforts to improve our water quality.
See you on September 17th. Together we can make a difference!

Or as Roger Caras, former head of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, called mixed-breed dogs, "Randomly Bred" ?
More than 25 million mixed-breed dog owners guess what breeds their dogs are. Now, with a simple swipe of a cheek swab, Wisdom Panel Insights can determine the ancestry of a mixed-breed dog by DNA testing for more than 185 breeds, the largest database on the market. With this self-contained kit, the Mars Veterinary Lab will email you a detailed report back in about three weeks.
A dog's ancestry can influence her or him in surprising ways. Physical traits (size, shape of ears & tail, length of hair and color) plus behaviors like chasing birds, digging, herding and barking, all come from the various breeds in a dog's family tree. Once you understand your dog's natural tendencies, you can create a tailored training, exercise and nutrition program to fit his or her one-of-a-kind needs.
During the month of September, Dog Beach Dog Wash will be selling the Wisdom Panel Insight kit for $49.95 (regularly $69.95), with a $10-off coupon from us, and another $10-off coupon from the manufacturer.
Now is a great time to finally answer the question, "What kind of dog is that?" Also, the kit will make a great holiday gift for friends or family who are always wondering about their dogs' backgrounds.

Have a safe and happy Labor Day. We'll be serving lemonade the weekend of September 3rd, so please stop by.
And a reminder that starting the day after Labor Day (Sept. 6th) our prices for washes will increase by $1 and for rinses & nail trims by 50¢. Our weekday cards (Monday through Friday) offering a free wash after 9 washes, are still available. And coupon books, with a savings of $2 a wash, will go on sale again Thanksgiving through New Year's. We held off raising prices as long as we could, but costs for everything have gone up. We hope you understand, and we thank you for your loyalty.
