Writing Effective Hiring Ads

Help WantedAll it takes is one glance at the classified section of a newspaper to realize that many advertisers will likely not attract good candidates because their ad is either too vague or lacking important detail. Ads with minimal information appeal to basic job applicants and they are apt to attract less-qualified candidates and simply go unnoticed by more qualified people. An effective ad however, can attract the best qualified candidates and screen out those who would not be a good fit. Here are five tips to help you craft an ad that's intended to attract candidates with the right skills:

  1. Have an interesting heading to attract their attention and a subheading to build their interest
  2. Speak the language of the candidates by using terminology commonly used for the job you're trying to fill
  3. Offer details about the job and tangible benefits such as on-the-job training available, career advancement opportunities, a secure future for motivated individuals
  4. Provide information about the company that may entice the candidate and appeal to their needs such as convenient location, team environment, contribute to the results, prominent company
  5. When possible, include a salary range, benefits if offered, location, how to apply and by when

To attract attention to the ad, design is also important. Make the ad large enough to fit the copy, don't run the type to the border and use modern fonts such as Century, Garamond, or Souvenir. For certain, a well-written ad will ensure that your advertising dollars attract more suitable candidates to your business.
