Generation Y - Ready for Work!

Young AdultsGeneration Y- also known as Millennials, Facebook Generation, Echo Boomers, or whatever you want to call them, is the fastest growing segment of today's workforce with numbers estimated as high as 70 million. Many of these young adults are just entering the workforce and can expect a tough road ahead. The recession and poor economic climate has taken its toll on this younger generation. According to the U.S Department of Labor Population Survey, the unemployment rate for Floridians, ages 20 to 24, is a staggering 15.5 percent. To make matters even worse, three in four Americans believe that today's youth have an inferior work ethic compared to their elders, based on aPew Research Survey. Like it or not, Millennials are the emerging workforce and our future leaders. This generation grew up with technology and rely on it to perform their jobs better. They are more likely to trade a higher paying job for one with flexible hours and work/life balance. Millennials are achievement and team-oriented and crave feedback and guidance. They also embrace change and diversity, all traits that can be considered valuable to businesses. Consider this- every day for the next 18 years, about 10,000 Baby Boomers will turn 65. By 2030, when all Baby Boomers will have turned 65, eighteen percent of the nation's population will be at least that age, according to Pew Research Center population projections. As Baby Boomers retire, consider the fresh perspective and new ideas that youth can bring when making your hiring decisions. By knowing what motivates them in the workplace, you'll have a win-win for your business and the individual you employ.
