Dear ,
We kicked off the month of January with a series of industry specific job fairs that employers have found to be very successful. The first job fair was held on January 17 at our Sarasota Career Center that brought together employers who were hiring in the manufacturing sector. Job candidates were pre-screened and then provided an appointment for an interview on site at our facility. We were thrilled to learn that six of our customers recieved offers that day, and we anticipate more offers to be made once the employers complete testing and background/drug tests. Tomorrow, we'll host our second job fair for employers in the healthcare industry. There's no greater satisfaction than knowing we are helping our customers get back to work!

Bright Outlook for Job Market |
We are encouraged to learn that first-time unemployment claims reported the week of January 9, 2012 were at their lowest level in nearly four years. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, initial applications for jobless benefits dropped by 50,000 to 352,000 reaching a bottom not seen since 2008. This is good news not typically seen during the weeks following the holidays. On the Suncoast, the unemployment rate for December 2011 was 9.8 percent, the lowest rate since January 2009 when the rate was also 9.8 percent (not seasonally adjusted). According to the Department Economic Opportunity, Florida is showing several signs of improvement:
- Florida's unemployment rate of 9.8 percent (seasonally adjusted number)is the lowest rate since April 2009 (over two years)
- For December, the regional workforce boards' total number of individuals placed in jobs was 25,201 with 3,080 of those individuals coming from the pool of Unemployment Compensation claimants.
- The number of unemployed in Florida is below one million for the ninth consecutive month
- Florida's unemployment rate is down 2.1 percentage points from December's 2010, when the rate was 12.0 percent
- Seven major industries gained jobs over the year
- Fifteen out of twenty-two metro areas gained jobs over the year
- Tax revenues were up 4.0 percent in December compared to a year ago marking the 21st straight month of annual increases
- Florida visitation was up 5.1 percent over the year in the third quarter of 2011 with oversees visitors up 18.7 percent
We know that the Suncoast's lower unemployment rate for December was due in part to holiday hiring, however we are seeing increased optimism by employers who interface with our Business Services team. Business Services continues to stay very busy because employers are hiring! |
