HAS ECONOMIC RECOVERY
SLOWED TO A HALT?

On July 8, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released the latest jobs report for June 2011. The report states that the number of unemployed persons (14.1 million) and the unemployment rate (9.2 percent, up 0.1 percent from 9.1 in May) were essentially unchanged over the month. Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult men (9.1 percent), adult women (8.0 percent), teenagers (24.5 percent), whites (8.1 percent), blacks (16.2 percent), and Hispanics (11.6 percent) showed little or no change in June. The jobless rate for Asians was 6.8 percent, not seasonally adjusted.

On the Suncoast, the most recent unemployment rate available for May was 10.3 percent. While this rate is still considered high, rates have declined five consecutive months since January when the rate was 12.3 percent. We remain cautiously optimistic, and continue to stay focused on successes we see every day.  Here are just a few:

  • A local company posted 40 job openings for member services managers, supervisors and agents. Suncoast Workforce recruited 17 candidates based on the employer's job requirements and 14 were hired! A second round of interviews is pending to help fill the remaining positions.

  • A contractor needing masonry workers has joined forces with CareerEdge and Suncoast Workforce to recruit and train local residents. Suncoast Workforce successfully recruited 18 qualified candidates for the employer. CareerEdge is covering the cost of formalized mansonary training. Further, the employer is paying a wage of $10 per hour during the training period. Once the individuals exit training and begin working, the wage will be increased to $13 per hour. In addition, 14 WIA trainees will also participate in Suncoast Workforce's On-The-Job training program.

  • Suncoast Workforce recently filled an Electrical Engineer position, salary $80,000!

So, on the Suncoast, is the local economy doing better than the national level? The sense is yes, but at a very slow rate. While there continues to be too few job openings compared to the number of people looking, we'll concentrate on these daily successes and positive news.
