Week of Feb. 26, 2012

Hello Friends,
This is week two of the Lenten season and I hope that you have taken some time to slow down and reflect. It isn't always easy when we have so many deadlines or family responsibilities, but re-focusing during Lent is a big gift. I am looking forward to our journey together through both the Lenten study and on Sunday mornings as we reflect on what the story of the Cross holds for each of us. During this Lent we have been asking the question, "What does it mean to be 'Righting in the Margins'?" This week Pastor Craig will be sharing from the book of Acts how God calls us to engage the margins. This will be a great message and a wonderful time of worship together.
~ Blessings, Pastor Sarah |

 Food Drive for SCO
This Sunday, March 4th
South County Outreach is desperately short on certain food items at this time of the year. They are limited in their ability to have Grocery Store Food Drives this month as it is also a key time for Girl Scout fundraising at the local grocery stores. The Cooperative Parish Give Ministry team is asking everyone, at both campuses, to pick up a few extra items for SCO as you shop.
Items include: peanut butter, cereal, macaroni & cheese, pasta, pasta sauce, and rice.
Together we can have a huge impact on hunger in our local communities. Please bring your items to church this Sunday, March 4th. |

SHIP: Self-Help Interfaith Program
A fantastic opportunity to help the recently jobless... SHIP Homeless Shelter dinners are being hosted by SMUMC/SOTH from March 24th - 31st. We will be responsible for providing dinners each night by 6:15 pm at the SHIP house in Garden Grove. It's a rewarding and family-safe, chaperoned environment, with full kitchen available. Please bring your cooking utensils, your love and support, and heart for conversation! The most important part of dinner is the talking between the guests and your family; having that connection and interaction. The food is important, but secondary. Signups are at the Message Center. For details please contact Mark Burke or call 949-525-8386. |

 Lenten Study
This year instead of several small Lenten groups, we are going to engage in one all-church study. As a community, we will be studying the book, 24 Hours That Changed the World by Adam Hamilton. Pastor Sarah will help facilitate the hour-long discussion and video series on Wednesday nights at 7pm. It is not necessary to attend all of the sessions, join in whenever you can. Each week feel free to bring your dinner beforehand at 6:30 pm; a group of us will be eating our brown bag dinners together before study to avoid traffic, etc. The series leads us step by step through the last 24 hours of Jesus' life. Come and join this transformational time of devotion and study during Lent.

 Shepherd of the Hills Preschool
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
~ Philippians 4:13
We begin this month with parents meeting with teachers to share the growth their children have experienced over the year. Their cognitive, social, emotional, spiritual and physical growth will be discussed and insights into our children's day at school will be shared.
There is fun to be had in learning to read on Dr. Seuss Days, where his rhyme and rhythm entice us into his fantastic world of phonemic awareness. We'll turn our yard into "Vroomville," eat green eggs and ham, and read Dr. Seuss books here, there and everywhere! We'll also share other favorite authors in our Classic Children's Literature Unit, from Eric Carle to A.A. Milne. On St. Patrick's Day, sneaky leprechauns will leave little surprises to be found by wondering children. We will end the month with a "Crazy Day" where we get creative and a little bit wacky!
In HIS Service, Becci Lukes, Director Cindie Reilly, Director SM Campus
