Week of Feb. 5, 2012

Rev-W

Hello Friends,

The very fact that you are reading this from your computer or mobile phone means that you are connected to a social network. In this day and age many of us are in constant connection to other people and news sources. As Pastor Craig shared last week, God is moving through all of those social networks. The question is who is in our network and what does that have to do with the Kingdom of God? Join us as we ponder these questions.

It is with great sadness that I share with the congregation that David Enger's mother passed away from cancer last week. There will be a memorial service at 2 pm on Saturday, February 11th at Grace Presbyterian Church, 1450 East Vista Way, Vista, CA. There is a caravan going down leaving at 12:30 pm from the Mission Viejo campus. David's mother's death comes only shortly after David's wife, Yoshimi's, father passed away. We ask that you be in prayer for the whole family during this difficult time. If you would like to make a donation in honor of David's mother, the family is asking for contributions to Operation Hope, a women's shelter in Vista. You may make out a check to Operation Hope and leave it in the offering basket on Sunday or at the office during the week. We will make sure they are given to the family to give to the shelter.

During difficult times like these I am grateful for our community and I look forward to seeing all of you in worship this Sunday.

~ Blessings, Pastor Sarah

Sunday, February 12th at 6:30 pm.

A year after the District Superintendent visited SMUMC with some important and difficult choices for the future, it is now time to revisit where we are as a church and what the pathway forward looks like.  While we are working toward a merger with Shepherd of the Hills, there are questions and issues that SMUMC faces in the next few months that affect our future as a church.  The Pastoral Team of the Cooperative Parish (Pastors Craig, Sarah, and Russ) will be making a presentation on the "State of the Church" that will provide a roadmap of the possible changes in store for the SMUMC community.

This gathering is distinct and separate from the Cooperative Parish Checkpoint scheduled for February 26th.  Please make every effort to be present for this important gathering of the SMUMC community.

24 Hours That Changed the WorldLenten Study

This year instead of several small Lenten groups we are going to engage in one all church study. As a community, we will be studying the book, 24 Hours That Changed the World by Adam Hamilton. Pastor Sarah will help facilitate the hour long discussion and video series on Wednesday nights at 7pm beginning Feb. 29th through April 4th. Each week feel free to bring your dinner beforehand at 6:30 pm, a group of us will be eating our brown bag dinners together before study to avoid traffic etc. It is suggested, but not mandatory, that before you begin the study you purchase the book. The series leads us step by step through the last 24 hours of Jesus' life. Come and join this transformational time of devotion and study during Lent.

PancakesShrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner
February 21st, 5 - 7 pm, $5 per family / $2 per person at the Mission Viejo site.

We will begin with crafts and a bounce house followed by the eating of pancakes and conclude with pancake races for all ages.  Strove Tuesday, also known as Mardi Gras or Carnival, is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday. Throughout the world people indulge themselves on foods that traditionally aren't allowed during Lent. Pancakes are eaten because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent in the Middle Ages.  Bring the kids for some Pancake Fun!!  Please RSVP to the M.V. office, 949-837-2941.

"..in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you." ~ Matthew 7:12

Valentine's Day celebrations at the Preschool will focus on sharing God's love through our love for others. We teach the children how we express our love through caring words and kind deeds and celebrate all that we love from our homes and families. We end the month with a (stuffed) "pet" parade where each child's pet receives a special award, in accordance with each one's unique character.

The Preschool will also be providing Chancy & Bruce Screenings this month for all children who will be Kindergarten age in the Fall. The screening will help parents realize strengths and areas where more experience for their child might be needed. Because we feel so strongly that developmental screening is such an important tool for all parents to invest in, we subsidize the fee so all our families can afford to have their child take part.

Registration for Fall 2012 continues at both Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo. The Santa Margarita campus will be adding a Jr. Kindergarten this year, and will continue to service children in the later stages of potty training. Contact us if you or someone you know would like a tour.
