Greetings!
The age old question, what should I collect? Usually followed up quickly by how do I find it?
Whether you consider yourself a numismatist, a casual collector, or purely set on investment, having a strategy is the key to being successful. Of course success is defined differently by each person, but whether it is completing a set, accumulating a certain amount of wealth, or return on investment targets, the odds of success are dramatically increased when you and those assisting you are executing to a common plan.
There are many factors that play into the development of your plan. My daughter has a fine eye for pre-1933 gold, and is particularly attracted to the shiny, mirrored appearance of the proof coins. However, on an annual budget of $300 - $500 a year for collecting, her wants and needs are slightly misaligned. She learned quickly that she could save and by one lower grade proof-like coin, or look to a different set type that fit her desires that a budget could support. She was attracted to the Walking Liberties and is now discovering the subtleties between the dates and the relationship to her budget. The point is that there is a budget and a set out there for everyone, the key is to match them up properly.
The world of coins is no different than any other good and service, prices are dictated by supply and demand. The fewer coins in a given condition that exist, the higher the price. The prices also build in future anticipation of market conditions. Coins destroyed, coins discovered, political events, and commodity movements are just a few of the items that can affect a coins price. Having a single coin vs. a coin in a set is an example of the whole being worth more than the sum of its parts. Picking the right set is critical if return is one of your goals. If you are a collector, it is seldom fun collecting a set that does not appeal to you or have some significance. Again, striking that balance is where the strategy comes in.
We have a number of customers that collect with a larger goal in mind. On the surface it appears to be an accumulation of coins, but a closer look indicates a combination of type coins, a full single year issue, or a balance of gold and silver at some pre-determined ratio. Again, this is a plan that has been developed ahead of time, and while it may change from time to time, it is a plan that is executed by the owner (you), often times many buyers (dealers), and sellers when it is necessary to liquidate or re-balance the collection.
Take your time and get your plan right. Execution is usually the easy part, and patience will be rewarded.
