Summer weather has hit, and field season is in full swing. Now that the 6th West Branch Susquehanna Restoration Symposium is behind us we are looking forward to more successful events throughout the summer. If you were unable to attend the symposium check out the WBSRC website at www.wbsrc.org/symposium.html to download copies of the presentations and program booklet.

West Branch Susquehanna Restoration Symposium a Success!

 

Another West Branch Susquehanna Restoration Symposium

has come and gone, and as with past symposia, it was met with great success. On April 27th, over one hundred people from watershed groups, TU chapters, conservation districts, state agencies, industry, and academia gathered at the Ramada Conference Center in State College for a day of AMD-related presentations. Read More...

Welcome Interns!

 

Trout Unlimited is pleased to announce that three interns have joined the Eastern Abandoned Mine Program for the summer of 2012. Zeb Buck is a recent graduate of Lycoming College with a B.S  in Biology. Zeb intends on pursuing graduate school in elasmobranch ecology or a related field. In his free time Zeb enjoys SCUBA diving, kayaking, and fishing. Nicole Lundberg has  recently graduated from Juniata College with a B.S. in Environmental Science.  Her goal is to receive her M.Sc. from Louisiana State University's Department of Renewable Natural Resources. Melissa Tesauro is also a recent graduate of Juniata College with a B.S. in Environmental Science and a minor in Geology. All three interns will be working to identify wild trout streams through the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission's Unassessed Waters Initiative, as well as, assisting with field work in support of TU's AMD Technical Assistance Program. TU and WBSRC Continue Education Initiative

 

Trout Unlimited is finishing work on the 2011 DEP Environmental Education grant. This grant provided money to support two educational development interns that worked with TU staff to develop an integrated AMD curriculum for 8th-12th graders. The curriculum teaches the history and importance of coal mining, and basics of coldwater ecology. It also provides many lessons and activities that teach about AMD formation, its impacts and treatment.  Read More...

Clearfield County Receives Grant for Interactive Map

Von Holguin, an Ameri*Corps OSM/VISTA stationed with the Clearfield County Conservation District, has received funding from the Water Resources Education Network to create and publicize an online interactive map at www.clearfieldcountywaters.com/. The map will contain the 102 river miles of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River that flow through Clearfield County. Read More...

Member Spotlight: Centre County PASEC

The Centre County chapter of the PA Senior Environment Corps has partnered with the Beech Creek Watershed Association and Lock Haven University to set up water testing sites near Marcellus Shale gas drilling operations in the Beech Creek Watershed. For nearly two years two PA SEC teams have been collecting samples from streams that are located near drilling sites.
