Two WBSRC Members Partner to Protect Brook Trout Habitat in West Branch

January 26th, 2011 marked an important event in the West Branch: the finalization of a conservation easement in the

headwaters of Buck Run, tributary to Deer Creek. Hopefully, this easement is the first of many projects aimed at protecting important brook trout habitat in AMD-impacted

areas of the West Branch Susquehanna

watershed. It was made possible by a partnership between Trout Unlimited and WBSRC member organization, ClearWater Conservancy, and by a generous donation of the easement by the property owner, Mrs. Margaret Burgwin. Read More

Watershed Spotlight: Clearfield Creek

Clearfield Creek Watershed Association (CCWA) has been working to improve water quality, protect the natural areas of the watershed, educate the public, and promote awareness since 2001.  In recent months CCWA has been active in AMD remediation, education, road and stream clean-up and illegal dump sites, as well as outreach. The many projects CCWA is able to take on are a clear sign of the active membership, and engaged public. Read More.

Volunteers Needed for Upcoming AMD Education Events

As reported in last quarter's newsletter TU and the WBSRC have been working on a series of AMD education events. These events aim to educate middle and high school students on the history of coal mining, the formation of AMD, the environmental and economic impacts of AMD, as well as, what can be done about it. The education events, which include both classroom and field trip programs, will be conducted at five schools across the West Branch. Also, TU will work with the teachers to establish funding for a Trout in the Classroom (TIC) set-up in each school. Each classroom will also receive a water chemistry test kit. Read More.
