Nonprofit Spotlight: Leadership Howard County
Leadership Howard County (LHC) works to build a better community by providing learning, networking, and community engagement opportunities to individuals from corporate, government and nonprofit organizations who want to improve Howard County and develop their leadership potential. Notable LHC graduates include former County Executive Jim Robey, HC EDA CEO Dick Story, Howard County Library CEO Valeria Gross, Horizon Foundation President/Ceo Rich Krieg, HCC President Kate Hetherington, HCC Vice Presidents Lynn Coleman and Tom Glaser, and many other County luminaries. LHC offers four basic programs:
  • Leadership Premier, for business, nonprofit and civic leaders who live and/or work in Howard County and have some history of community involvement.
  • Leadership Essentials, which teaches skills to young professionals living and/or working in Howard County who are viewed in their respective organizations as rising stars and have expressed an interest in community service.
  • Leadership U, for Howard County high school students who want to test their leadership capabilities outside the classroom. High school juniors take part in a four-month experiential learning program and community service project that asks them to solve real-world problems.
  • Youth on Board, which gives high school junior or seniors the opportunity to gain a firsthand experience as board members for local nonprofit organizations.
