Swami Candela's Quest for Answers | | The 1.732 Solution
 Dear Swami,
As a former student in your class, I was pleased to learn at the feet of the master how to calculate current in a 3-phase system, but moving lights have the best of me. I'm sure it comes as no surprise to you that trying to find a true technical answer online is harder than putting the smoke back into a fuse. I remember the number 1.732 being somewhere in the answer, but I've have found solutions using three different formulas (all including 1.732), each yielded an answer that is within 50% of the manufacturer's specs, but none was closer than 10%. I trust the guys at (insert name of moving light manufacturer here) more than the guy in this YouTube video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCfGesr0qR0). Can you enlighten me about how to calculate the current in each leg of a 208V system with a moving light load including power factor?

Open Aperture | | 2012 Olympics Closing Ceremonies
Two Avolites Ai Infinity servers and two Sapphire media consoles provide the control and back up that will be used by the Immersive Team to map and control the 80,000 9-pixel mini screens in each seat, as seen in the Olympics Opening Ceremony, producing the world's largest video screen.
The rest of the Avolites Media Ai control and backup system comprises two Sapphire Media Consoles, two Ai Infinity Servers and 28 Ai Miami licences running on CT servers. These will control the four large audience screens and a projection mapping show.
In the control room, live in the stadium were Dave Green, Trey Harrison, Mark Calvert , Martin Harvey and JB Toby. Enjoying the glorious spectacle live in the stadium was John Munro, Steve Warren, Louise Green and Miriam Calvert.
"All the seats of the stadium were fitted with a 'pixel tablet', each with 9 LEDs", created by Tait Technologies. "The tablets took two months to install and used 197 miles of cable. Will Case, Creative Director of Crystal CG (who made the content), said, "It allows you to break the traditional boundary between the audience and the field of play. The video mapping of the audience pixel screen was achieved using a single Avolites Media Ai Infinity system." -The Times on Sunday Article, (edited to be factually correct.)

Best Practice | | Know Your Lens Color Code
From Kathryn Maulis comes this handy illustration of standard color codes for Source Four lens tubes. Although there are no industry standards for color coding lens tubes and cable lengths, some organizations use de facto standards like this. Standardizing helps increase efficiency and simplifies organization.

Canvass + Wind = Sail
|
Velcro Anyone?
This stage, reportedly weight four tons and "firmly anchored in the ground," takes flight as an angry stage hands watches helplessly. A gust of wind makes child's play of the entire rig and has no trouble lifting it and tossing it on the ground. Fortunately, no one was injured in the mishap.
The Event Safety Alliance (www.eventsafetyalliance.org) is working to help prevent accidents like this by writing a guide for live event safety. The organization is currently seeking your feedback on the draft document.
