Technology and Education
Education Without the Arts?
Entertainment Electricity Training "Without the connection to our emotions that music, dance, visual art, and drama provide, students' ability to cultivate their right-brain "soft skills" ends up being stunted. In a global society that needs people with the emotional intelligence to have both personal and working relationships with people from diverse cultures-and the ability to think creatively and entrepreneurially-that means denying kids access to the arts has less-than-desirable consequences."
- from Good Education editor Liz Dwyer in an article entitled, "Without the Arts, It's Not Education."

Welding Cable and the NEC
Welding CableWelding cable is rated for use with up to 600 volts, the insulation is rated 105°C, it's very flexible, its jacket is oil- and weather-resistant and it's available in AWG sizes up to 500 MCM. So why not use it as feeder cable?

The NEC doesn't recognize welding cable for general wiring. Manufacturers specify that it is for use with welding machines, and it's not designed to be used as continuous duty cable.

Ken Vannice of Leviton wrote an excellent article about the use of portable cords and cables in the live event production industry. To read the article, click here.

Where Design & Technology Intersect
Augmented Reality
Augmented Reality
The art of applied technology.
Augmented reality lives at the intersection of art and technology. Better and faster computers are lowering the bar for video production technology, and video artists are pushing the envelope, blurring the lines between what's real and what's not. This video profiles some of the artists at the forefront of augmented reality and video mapping.

Sustainability & Occupational Safety
Stage Collapse
The Event Safety Alliance is working to prevent more deadly accidents.
Keeping Shows Safe

"Over 11,000 shows were successfully produced without incident....there were five catastrophic events around the world where fans were critically injured or perished; one incident of this nature is too many."

- Jim Digby, production manager (Linkin Park) and executive director of the Event Safety Alliance.

In May of this year, Ray Waddell of Billboard Magazine wrote an article about the Event Safety Alliance. Today, the ESA is working to create a US version of the "Purple Guide," the Event Safety Guide from the UK. Check out ESA's web site at www.eventsafetyalliance.org.

"I know you've been bounced around in a dark truck and then strangers beat you with a hammer, but right now I need you to get centered. You have to be grounded."
