Happy World IPv6 Day!
Today is World IPv6 Day. Several internet service providers, network manufacturers and web companies are permanently enabling Next Generation IP addressing in the products today after years of testing.
As of February 2011, the last batch of IPv4 addresses was released, meaning we have now officially run out of IP addresses. Fortunately, some smart, forward-thinking people have been working on replacing the 32-bit IPv4addressing with a new 128-bit IPv6 addressing system. You may have noticed that your computer has both an IPv4 address and an IPv6 address. Up until now, both systems were being used. But from now on, all new devices will have only a v6 IP address. Support for IPv4 will continue for some time, but we're not entering a new age of IP addressing.
