Deadly Arc Flash Can Ruin Your Whole Day

Not long ago I was conducting an information session about the industry testing and certification program known as ETCP (Entertainment Technician Certification Program - www.ETCP.ESTA.org). Midway through the session an individual raised his hand and asked a simple question: "Why should I become certified?"

Actually, it was a question from his colleagues and he was just the surrogate questioner. Still, the straightforward question took me a bit by surprise. I was under the impression that the attendees would be people who were already convinced of the value of becoming certified and I wasn't prepared to argue the merits of the program. If only I had seen the link to the EC&M article about a deadly arc flash before the information session I might have been able to say something intelligible without stammering and stuttering.

The article to which I am referring if a forensic analysis of electrical troubleshooting gone wrong. It cost the electrician and an electrical inspector their lives and it was attributed to a lack of training and education.

Our industry is filled with good people who are self-taught or were taught on the job by people who were also self-taught. Many of us are very good at what we do but we lack a fundamental understanding of electrical safety. Don't let something like this ruin your whole day. Invest your time reading and studying your craft and learn about electricity and electrical safety the easy way, not the hard way.

New Seminars Announced in Dallas and Honolulu

AUSTIN, TX - August 11, 2010 - The Academy of Production Technology has announced two new seminars for training in electricity, power distribution, and control systems. The classes are provided for every aspect of the entertainment industry including non-electricians and non-technicians as well as experienced electricians and technicians in lighting, video, and audio.

The classes will be held in Dallas, TX on November 1-3 and in Honolulu, HI on March 14-16. For more information and to register, click here.

The 3-day events are presented by the Academy of Production Technology (APT), and it covers electricity theory, power distribution and control networking for the stage and studio. The course instructor is ETCP Certified Entertainment Electrician and Recognized Trainer Richard Cadena. The Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) is an industry-wide program developed by the ESTA Foundation and it is designed to promote safety through testing and assessment. The ETCP entertainment electricity certification test is a rigorous exam and this course is an ETCP Recognized course.

"This seminar is an excellent review for the practicing entertainment electrician as well as a primer for the aspiring electrician," says Cadena. "It has enough detail and information to challenge the experienced among us but presented in such a way as to convey useful concepts to the less experienced with a minimum amount of math and complexity."

Former attendee Tony Hansen, LD/systems consultant with Techni-Lux, says of the course, "I learned more usable and appropriate knowledge here than I did in four years of college." Another attendee, Jason Gay, said, "The class addressed issues we run into daily. I am more confident in my ability to work safely and direct others in their work."
