Electricity Day - Chapter Two

by Jacob Coakley

One of the things I love about this book is that each chapter begins with a quote. Sometimes funny, always apt. Chapter 2's starting quote is from Neil Armstrong: "Mystery creates wonder, and wonder is the basis of man's desire to understand."

What he doesn't mention is that wonder and the desire to understand leads to a lot of frustration at times. (I still find myself pondering what, exactly, energy is...) This week is more definitions, as we cover Electrical Concepts.

New Seminars Announced in Dallas and Honolulu

AUSTIN, TX - August 11, 2010 - The Academy of Production Technology has announced two new seminars for training in electricity, power distribution, and control systems. The classes are provided for every aspect of the entertainment industry including non-electricians and non-technicians as well as experienced electricians and technicians in lighting, video, and audio.

The classes will be held in Dallas, TX on November 1-3 and in Honolulu, HI on March 14-16. For more information and to register, click here.

The 3-day events are presented by the Academy of Production Technology (APT), and it covers electricity theory, power distribution and control networking for the stage and studio. The course instructor is ETCP Certified Entertainment Electrician and Recognized Trainer Richard Cadena. The Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) is an industry-wide program developed by the ESTA Foundation and it is designed to promote safety through testing and assessment. The ETCP entertainment electricity certification test is a rigorous exam and this course is an ETCP Recognized course.

"This seminar is an excellent review for the practicing entertainment electrician as well as a primer for the aspiring electrician," says Cadena. "It has enough detail and information to challenge the experienced among us but presented in such a way as to convey useful concepts to the less experienced with a minimum amount of math and complexity."

Former attendee Tony Hansen, LD/systems consultant with Techni-Lux, says of the course, "I learned more usable and appropriate knowledge here than I did in four years of college." Another attendee, Jason Gay, said, "The class addressed issues we run into daily. I am more confident in my ability to work safely and direct others in their work."
