Electricity Day Begins - One Chapter at a Time

Read Electricity for the Entertainment Electrician & Technician, get tutored by the author.

by Jacob Coakley

You may not know this, but my original training in theatre comes on the more artsy side of things. In college I had to take the requisite stagecraft class, so my carpenter skills -- even if rudimentary -- exist. And for a while I even pursued a career in sound -- training in sound design at San Francisco State and working as a designer and A2 for a few years. But this still leaves one major gap in my training: Lighting and electricity. Well, I'm about to close that gap.

Starting on Tuesday, August 17, I will begin reading Electricity for the Entertainment Electrician & Technician by Richard Cadena, editor of PLSN magazine and certified ETCP trainer. Each week I'll read one chapter of the book, then blog about it.

Not only that, but I'll be doing this with the help of Richard Cadena (a.k.a. Swami Candela) himself. After I read each chapter, I'll be sending Richard an e-mail with my questions about the chapter. He'll chime in with his deep knowledge and shallow sense of humor to explain some concepts a little more deeply. It'll be like a commentary track on a DVD -- only he'll answer your questions, too! Comment on the blog post, get involved, and you'll get tutored by the man who -- literally -- wrote the book (several) about entertainment electricity.

Richard normally charges $225 a day for his seminars ( or $200 with a discount). But if you grab his book, and read along for the next few weeks, you can sit in on some of that knowledge for free.

So grab your copy of Electricity for the Entertainment Electrician & Technician, and start reading! We hit Chapter 1 next week, August 17!

New Seminars Announced in Dallas and Honolulu

AUSTIN, TX - August 11, 2010 - The Academy of Production Technology has announced two new seminars for training in electricity, power distribution, and control systems. The classes are provided for every aspect of the entertainment industry including non-electricians and non-technicians as well as experienced electricians and technicians in lighting, video, and audio.

The classes will be held in Dallas, TX on November 1-3 and in Honolulu, HI on March 14-16. For more information and to register, click here.

The 3-day events are presented by the Academy of Production Technology (APT), and it covers electricity theory, power distribution and control networking for the stage and studio. The course instructor is ETCP Certified Entertainment Electrician and Recognized Trainer Richard Cadena. The Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) is an industry-wide program developed by the ESTA Foundation and it is designed to promote safety through testing and assessment. The ETCP entertainment electricity certification test is a rigorous exam and this course is an ETCP Recognized course.

"This seminar is an excellent review for the practicing entertainment electrician as well as a primer for the aspiring electrician," says Cadena. "It has enough detail and information to challenge the experienced among us but presented in such a way as to convey useful concepts to the less experienced with a minimum amount of math and complexity."

Former attendee Tony Hansen, LD/systems consultant with Techni-Lux, says of the course, "I learned more usable and appropriate knowledge here than I did in four years of college." Another attendee, Jason Gay, said, "The class addressed issues we run into daily. I am more confident in my ability to work safely and direct others in their work."
