True RMS
A reader writes: If you had to
explain in layman's terms what True RMS is and how it relates to a voltage
meter, how would you do that? Somebody asked me, and I could not get my
words out. He wanted to know what true RMS means and why a true RMS meter is better
than an regular voltage meter.
Answer: In
simple terms, an average reading meter (as opposed to a true RMS meter) will
give you inaccurate readings for anything other than a pure sine wave. When the
waveform gets distorted due to dimming, switch-mode power supplies (LEDs, audio
and lighting consoles, amplifiers, etc), or any other non-linear load, then an
average reading meter does not work properly due to the built in scaling
factor. A true RMS meter samples the waveform several thousand times per second
and calculates the RMS value, so it is accurate regardless of the shape of the
waveform.
